Slight smell of burning...

:(...from the front off-side wheel area. Driven energetically for around 35 miles and noticed the whiff when I opened the car door. No other apparent symptoms. Any ideas?

Could just be hot brakes.. maybe hot tyre. Possibly diff seal... Depends on the smell really :)

Or possibly even something got lodged up there and is burning off.

The start of a sticking caliper

Probably best to swing by A4 Audi on the way home then, as I'm due to go to The Lakes again this weekend

Final drive seal is number 1 cause of smells coming from under an 8...

Oil drops onto Cat, and only smells when Cat get hot.

It will depend on the slightest breeze as to where under the car it seems to come from.

A keen eye immediately after driving would see a whiff of smoke coming off the cat if this were the case.....

i'd have said sticking inner caliper as it seems to be a regularly occurring issue

And very distinctive it is too.
I sort of "miss the whiff" now it's finally fixed. :o

Mine is always very hot around the offside wheel arch and wing after a drive, but it's from the engine bay not the wheel/brakes. As it's been like that for over 60,000 miles I've never worried about it.

Are you sure the heat/smell is actually from the wheel though?

The_Laird 28th June 2012 11:02 AM

No, not sure where it's from, just that it's from that side and region. I've arranged to drop by the Audi independant later this afternoon, so hope to tell you who's right later! :)

And the winner is..................

IT - final drive seal. Just a weep at the moment, but booked in next week to have it sorted

Can't believe you doubted my ability to diagnose faults remotely... :p

That job does require dropping the exhaust by the way

Yeh, I remember the last bill! :(

That's a very distinctive odour when that seal goes. Main dealer did mine 2 years ago, cost £150 in total, including a brand new 'freebie' A4 s-line as a courtesy car for 3 days. The exhaust definitely comes off, as mine had to have new clamps (from Audi) which is why I had the A4 for 3 days.
I'll try for something larger next time, as the A4, whilst a nice small car, once inside, is quite hard for someone of my stature to squeeze into (contort) - The 8 is tight enough on the door aperture & headroom!

(apologies for the digression)
