2001 S8 Re-advertised?
Pistonheads have an advert for a 2001 S8 living in Lanark. The same advert was showing 3 or 4 months ago and it seems to be a reasonable price for a 79,000 mile car. Does anybody know this car, regn, S8 AUO,? Is it too good to be true? I am new to the forum and don't want to get burnt first time out. Thanks in anticipation of any help given.

got a link?
|
I still have the number for that guy on my phone.
It all looked like a top notch car, but I could never get a hold of the owner to go and see it. It was up for sale at 4200. What'd it at now? I went as far as a data check, which came back ok. Try n get a hold of the guy, its been up for sale for a while. Good luck - looks like a good car & I'm pretty sure that price will be negotiable!! |
Thanks for that Dave. I have spoken to the chap and it 'sounds' OK but it has 5 owners at 79,000 miles? Sounds a little odd. Currently on at £3800.
John |
5 owners on a 12 year old car would not ring alarm bells, thats an average of 2 years per owner which is longer than average.
|
Sorry Sarg, I have to admit that I don't know how to do links from Pistonheads.
Easy to find though, it is up at £3,800. John |
Hi Mannyo, what you say is true but if you look at it another way it is only16,000miles/owner? john

Looks nice, very good price considering the lower than norm miles.
Are those US style rear lenses? Wheels look OK, but need to budget for getting some new discs and paint the calipers when you can see them so clearly If I was in the market for a D2 S8, I'd be at least going to view this one |
Thanks for that Mr. 47p2! John
|
WHere abouts are you jayvee?
|
Hi Sarg, it comes with a standard set of wheels which I would refurb., if necessary, and re-fit. I am not too keen on changing wheel sizes, if its OK for Audi its OK for me.
|
it would look better on 20" FEs, 18"s always look a bit small on A8s, in my opinion +++
|
Hi 47p2, I am in Lancashire and am planning a trip to Scotland tomorrow! John
|
Hi Sarg, you may well have a point. Do the 20's affect the ride much? At least it has a set of both so I would have a choice? John
|
Weird or what, I'm going down to Lancaster today +++
I'm available tomorrow if you need a second opinion regards the car |
Hi 47p2, certainly is weird, I live 4 miles outside Lancaster! I would certainly welcome your input tomorrow. How far are you from Carluke? John
|
40 minutes or so.
|
Hi 47p2, my plan is to drive up this evening and stay at the Moorings Hotel in Motherwell and travel to Carluke earlyish tomorrow morning as I have to be in Preston in the afternoon. Would it be practical to meet at the hotel at say 09.00? You are helping me so please change arrangements to suit you! By the way I will not call you Mr.47p2 tomorrow. Thank you so much for your kind offer of help.
|
maybe the phone on the seat explains the difficulty in reaching him:rolleyes:
looks not bad for the price, wheels are not to my taste, but you could always pick up s/h others worth a look at least I would say ETA just noticed it comes with standard wheels too doh!! |
Sorry I can't come along too, but I'm heading for The Lakes tomorrow. Some things to consider:
Alcantara can get a bit bobbly and worn looking - and you either love it or hate it! Those 20" wheels are pretty horrible, but what condition are the 18" (Avus, hopefully) wheels. 20" is definitely a harsher ride, but with good tyres it's OK. But you'd pay up to £1,000 for a decent set of original 20" FE wheels. The phone prep is awful! How much of a mess will that make when it comes out? But if it's only the transmission tunnel panel, you could easily get a replacement. Otherwise, it looks good on the photos. Good luck! |
Thanks Laird, I agree that the existing 20's are ghastly, e-bay methinks. I think the phone prep looks as though it is only clipped under the bottom of the trim so i hope it might come off easily. Thanks for your interest! John
|
Looks pretty decent.. if John can't make it through, then I'm 20 mins from Carluke, would be happy enough to come down and give it a VCDS scan, and a quick test drive.
|
This cars been about for a while so I suggest the guy would move a bit on price.
If I'd got a hold of him I was gonna ask him to drop the price a bit & keep his 20s to sell elsewhere.....worth a try! Mind n check for water in the footwells & the fuel pump as well (the one I bought came with a full tank - apparently if the pumps not 100% the car may run rough when petrol gets low) Apart from that, check the usual std car stuff - there's a checklist on audipages. I'm working tomorrow & not totally clued up on these cars, but if u need a second opinion or ur having any problems then get me on here or il PM u my number - I'm only a few miles away in North Lanarkshire. |

Much nicer to look at and sit on than leather. I make a habit of picking the "bobbles" off my drivers seat before I get in, if there are any new ones. The phone prep looks like it's fixed low down but easy to remove with no/minimal damage. |
I had a similar phone installation, it was one screw, snip the cable and gone
|
Richard, if you want we could both go along and meet John (jayvee) at the hotel and if you brought the vag-com I would leave that bit to you to checking over whilst I have a look at the other bits.
|
Hi John, Richard, I would be so grateful if you both could come along. I have asked/told the vendor that I am bringing a couple of friends along - no problem. Is it a 'mini-meet' that you call this sort of thing? This may not be the best place to say this but I am overwhelmed by the help you two and all the other forum members have given me.Thank you all, I think this is a special forum judging by my experience up 'till now! John
|
I have to leave soon to go to work, but will catch up with the thread when I return. jayvee I will pm you my phone number
Cheers |
You're right. There are some great guys here and I've had loads of help over the years with my '8s. And they're a good laugh when you meet up too! :)
|
Oh aye, a great laugh when we start picking faults in jayvee's potential new purchase.
I went to Northern Ireland on Wednesday to view a car, the vendor had a two hour drive to meet me at the ferry terminal and when I started picking faults and said I wasn't interested he was furious and started kicking off. I had been told the car was 100% original and untouched, sadly it had been painted along both sides, dents and dings in the two back doors, suspension lowered and fitted with a manual gearbox. We had discussed on the phone exactly what I was looking for and he gave me all the right answers and that was why I went to view, but as soon as I saw it I was very unhappy. Ha ha, me bad and he left with his tail between his legs |
Good luck tomorrow!
Il be mucho jealous if u buy it. Thats the colour i wanted, and its only along the road. Pity i couldnt get hold of the seller |
Hi Dave, if I don't buy it I will give you all the help I can. Thanks for your input.
|
Sadly I couldn't meet with jayvee this morning due to work commitments at the last minute but hopefully Richard has managed to catch up with him.
|
I did... Though awaiting the final outcome as I needed to head off. Car comes up clean in VCDS with the exception of 2 parking sensors. Some oil around the engine, which is either a gasket on the cover or just overspill. Drove OK, gearbox was decently smooth.
Body work and interior trim needs some TLC, but on the whole, nothing too bad with the exception of one of the chrome bumber trim clips having broke, but not sure how much work that is to fix (as a result, the chrom trim sticks out). only point of any concern is that the brakes are poor.. as in from 80 to 0, no ABS, just feeling very spongy.. but both rears really need done, so not sure if that's the problem, or if they just need bled. Had a text from Jayvee... Looks like the t/belt may not have been done.. Conincidental that it's been sat with 79k miles on for a few months? So maybe £800+ to put everything right, but what else has he skimped on? |
Thanks so much for your input and effort. I think I will price a belt job and deduct it from the previous figure and maybe bid again. However I will not be brokenhearted if the bid is not accepted.
