Yup, and as it is the power grid is stretched to capacity. The worst nightmare would be everybody buying these things and plugging them into charge.....

It wouldn't be too bad if they were charged off-peak and/or via some managed system, but in our society I can't see that happening. :tuttut:

I must admit that when we were looking at putting solar panels on our roof a while back I did also consider using the surplus daytime power to charge an electric vehicle of some sort. Another project that never got "off the ground". :o

I always thought putting them on charge would be an issue. A large proportion of the poppulation have trouble parking in there own street, let alone within extension lead distance. Then there are those that live in flats or tower blocks. It's completely infessible for a large proportion of society to have electric cars they can recharge overnight at home.

the thought of a mass of extension cables snaking around the pavement is too funny to contemplate. You can imagine the fun that could be had with those!! Even if there were charging points installed in parking bays and in residential streets, the issues would be immense for those who cant park on driveways.

Could be a very inexpensive way of motoring, plug into your neighbours electrical supply +++

They should have easily exchangeable standard batteries like forklifts so that you can just drive in something like a petrol station, swap you empty/half empty for a charged one and pay whatever you have used on old one.

Yup, I see this as one of the best routes forward. Dont sit and wait for the car to charge (apple style) - Just swap the batteries over for a fully charged set (everyone else style) :D

Whether they can make all this storing, charging and heaving around of batteries cost effective however who knows...

A few friends and me were talking about this not so long ago and were came to the conclusion that although tech has moved on quick and is moving so fast, but at the end of the day were using steam to power cars.

I’m sure this has been done before?

OK not quite the same as you don't have to spend a fortune or do all the damage to the planet to mine all the nasty’s to make the battery and you're not left with all those really nasty metals and chemicals at the end lift of the battery.

Renault have a system in France for a battery swap, you drive up and the batteris are swapped under the car automaitically. but what are the chances of the industry coming up with a standard :(
