Rear door glass replacement
Well, during a recent trip to holland, someone had a go at stealing the box of rubbish that i had left on the back seat....the anti theft glass did such a good job that i didnt even notice till late in the day.
The fact that the would-be thief had to have two goes before giving up took the sting out of the incident, but has left me with some work to do. I *thought* that i had privacy glass, so managed to track a replacement tinted window from a 2008 model from fleabay (a8parts didnt have one) and fitted it today....now the problem..... Having fitted it, it doesnt close properly- it binds closing so needs some help to close, and even then leaves a 10mm gap at the top. Have i installed it wrong, or have i got the wrong part? |
Why did you not just get a car glass company to change it for a brand new one. You'll get a nice new Audi one, for the cost of your glass excess and they'll fit it as well.

That was not too helpful an answer....
Did you possibly bend one of the guides, is there some debris in the channels? The glass is very unlikely to be wrong size/shape so I'd be looking for something simple. Try some lubrication and work it up and down a few times and see if it frees up! Stew, |
Make sure you have adjusted the channels properly

Thanks, ill double check the guides at the weekend to make sure i havent done anything daft

Loose trim
Took it all out and refitted it today and all is good. It turned out to be a bit of trim in the channel had popped out. Thanks for you excellent advice.

OMG thanks your a life saver lol.
and its a d3. |
I also remved the mounting panel underneath, but not sure if this is actaully necessary.
Tool wise, youll need various torx drives and a star drive (either M10 or 12 from memory) for the screws 4,5,6,7 in the diagram. You do need to remove the outer door seal, which is glued to the door at the top. I used a trim tool to unclip the clips first before breaking the glue so that i didnt tear any of the rubber. I would also get a few replacement door clips a s you will break one or two, and make sure that you "reset" the clips prior to refitting as they wont go through the mounting holes otherwise and make sure the seals are fully seated around the window. |
thanks for that.
and ive got a full torx/star set from machine mart so ill be ok with tool the side of things lol. its the technical bit but the diagram looks straight forward enough and i got little brothers that has patitence so yeh im sorted lol. and the seal is it just the top? or is the actual whole door seal from the outside glued on? |
The seal is the one that goes up the side of the door that is glued, at the top Near screws 5 and 6, it is continuous over he top of the window frame so you will need to pull it out from the frame to release it, or at least that is what i did.

ok cool thanks much apreciated.
ill figure it out, when i get to it lol. just a quick question regarding windows, when i wind the window up using the auto feature, it has a tendency to wind itself back down. its fine if i do it manually and slowly but the auto wind up just goes back down. you know when you put your hand in the way while its winding up, it will go back down straight away if it feels pressure. do you know why this happens? could it be dirt? btw the windows work fine up down nor problems. just sometimes the auto up decides to go back down on its own accord lol it happens to the drivers front window all the time, passenger rarely, rear passenger all the time and rear drivers rarely. |
I know what you mean, mine did that when I first replaced the glass - it is the regulator detecting increased torque required to move the glass and interprets this as a trapped hand.
It could be that the frame is not aligned, but there isn't much freedom of movement for this (unless it is twisted which is unikely), so I would look at the seals within the runners being slightly out of aligment - this was my problem. Look carefully around the frame to see if any parts of the seal have popped out a little - it only take a small piece out of position to affect the operation of the windows. Just a follow up thought - when you have the frame out, carefully run the window up and down to make sure it is free to move the full range of the window - this will help identify where it is binding if it does. |
cool thanks for that.
will check them when i remove and refit them :) |
