Gearbox worry?!?!?!?

Hey guys,

Had a wee scan in this section to see if anyone had same issue but couldn't see anything!

Car : 2002 A8 2.8V6 Quattro Sport.............

I selected "R" and pressed the gas pedal before the gear was engaged, it made a small bang as it selected "R". When I changed from "R" to "D" all the gear symbols on the dash were lit up with the red box and the car seemed to be stuck in like a limp mode!!!!! :(

I stopped, selected "P" and turned off the engine. When I re-started the car it was back to normal with only the selected gear lit up with the red box around it!

After this its as if I can hear the gearbox selecting 1st but I'm not sure if its my paranoia!!!!

So any advice or answers guys????? Its going into the garage on Monday for a health check so was thinking a gearbox service and oil change etc!!!!

TIA..............+++

Sounds fine, as long as its behaving now I wouldnt worry. No gearbox autobox is going to like having a gear selected at above idle. You are I suspect having a little paranoia with regard to the noise into 1st given what had just happened.

 I hear ya fella!!!!!........................Just found this to add to my paranoia!!!!!!!!

Get hold of VAG-Com and do a scan of the autobox ecu, it will have recorded a fault when the lights all came on. I'm guessing a bit here, but just clear the fault and then enjoy driving the car. If anyone should be worrying about the auto box its me, at 181K miles without any maintenance. I gave up reading the horror stories, and just drive and enjoy the car.

Super, that's what I'll do!!!!

gearbox

i had this trouble with my wife car ok in drive then put in reverse it jumped swich engine of and cleaed for a sort time when got it check found out it was the gearbox ecu full of water ,as the floor in car had water leak the cost of a ecu was £1300 pound so the car was scraped.hope your car is not that problem good luck with the scan

Richierich37 3rd November 2012 03:39 PM

Dam problem is still there, fine in drive but banging into reverse when selected causing all gear select symbols to be in red boxes! Hope it's not the ecu as above!
Where is the gearbox ecu as I hope it's not in the passenger side floor where my water leak is causing floodage! :(

PsYcHe 3rd November 2012 03:47 PM

TCU is in the engine bay box next to the fan, so should be less liekly to flood, but could have some water in there.

HPsauce 3rd November 2012 03:48 PM

ECU is in the (sealed waterproof) box under the bonnet - passenger side in front of bulkhead beside the air intake.
There are several in there; I think it's on top.

Sorry to say, but this sounds to me like one of those pesky O rings has gone, which sadly means the gearbox will either need stripping and refurbing, or a reconditioned exchange box.

If that is the case, definitely wouldn't do a fluid change, it won't make it any better, could make it worse, and will cost you about £300 for nothing

thebluewhale 3rd November 2012 05:17 PM

Have you got the fault codes from Vagcom yet?

If we know what the fault code is we may be able to narrow it down.

Richierich37 3rd November 2012 07:04 PM

Thanks for the replies guys! Its going into the garage on Monday so if any codes show up I will post up for you to see. Its not sounding good though! :(

Had a similar issue with my A4 Cabriolet. Multitronic Box.

Flashing gear select indicators all at the same time on the dash mean that the
Box ECU needs replacing.... :(

Very costly.... I shipped mine to a company in UK that repair them for a fraction
of the dealers cost for a new one....

Hard to say without proper diagnosis. Could be simple problem like loose contact in wiring or low oil level/blocked filter, F125 switch,TCU or knackered gearbox.

Hope for the best be prepared for the worst.

I'm not looking forward to the scan results tbh! :(

Been away on site the last 2 days, should get a call tonight fella! +++

Richierich37 7th November 2012 06:49 PM

Got the call, here is the screen shot he sent me regarding the vagcom code..........

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...4ABFDAE24E.jpg

Its pointing at the F125 that someone suggested!

The vagcom also flagged up 2 rear lambda sensors but my mate says the car has got 2 new cheaper catalytic convertors that could be the issue! :tuttut: I have told him to replace the sensors but at over £110 each could be a costly error!!!!

Thanks guys +++

briang9 7th November 2012 06:58 PM

I wouldnt bother replacing the sensors, most non Audi spec cats trigger them but will still pass an MOT, if it keeps lighting up the light suggest you invest in something cheap like this which can check and reset the error

mannyo 7th November 2012 07:00 PM

I get cat errors all the time, and just reset the fault when it occurs (every couple of weeks). Passed MOT fine with perfect emissions between fault clearances, so I just carry on resetting the code.

At least the gearbox fault looks like an easy cheapish fix.

thebluewhale 7th November 2012 07:12 PM

Sounds like a result there fella.

The F125 switch might just need cleaning up, even a replacement switch is cheaper than a 'box refurb.

Great cheers guys, just called my mate and cancelled the Lambda sensors! Is that the exact code reader for my 2002 car? If so I'll puchase it?!?!?! +++

not 100% sure, it works with my S8 which is the same year so guess it should, best e-mail the guy to check before buying if I were you

cheers

The_Laird 7th November 2012 09:14 PM

If it helps, I can dig out the receipt for my F125 replacement earlier this year. There are 2 versions of this thing, one more expensive than the other. My car is also a 2002 S8 and needed the more expensive switch. But as said above, it's cheaper than a gearbox!

Spot on fella, got a call today from my mate saying the wrong F125 was sent and the one I need is around £125! Now won't get the car back till next week as he's away for the weekend! :(
