The Ian/Bushido/Baryonyx 1999 A8 D2 4.2 possibly for sale
Evening all,
I'm considering selling my D2 A8 4.2. I bought the car in August 2012 from Paul (Bushido) and since then have covered about 2500 miles in it. It's a very well kept 1999 facelift A8 4.2 in silver with a black half leather/alcantara S8 interior, S8 grille, S8 18" Avus alloy wheels and wing mirror covers. It's currently on 110,000 miles, up from 108,000 when I bought it. I've copied the spec list from Paul's advert, as follows: S8 18" wheels Electric slide and tilt solar panel sunroof (powers the interior fan when parked in the sun) Double glazing Rear(electric) and side blinds Independent left/right climate control with icy air-con. Excellent Bose stereo (6 disk cartridge). Front and rear parking sensors. Built in Sat-Nav with 2007 disk Parking sensors front and rear Front AND rear electric heated seats Cruise control Xenon lights Ski hatch Auto dimming rear view mirror with ambient red interior lighting. Map Lights Cheap car tax "A8" personal plate included (A8 UDH) Sump replaced, transmission oil changed. Here is a list that Ian posted detailing the work he carried out whilst he owned it: Installed full S8 Black Half Leather / Half alcantara interior Fixed Xenon levelling problem Fitted genuine S8 Ally mirrors Fitted genuine S8 grills Fixed broken HVAC flap motors Fixed Screenwash level sensor Fixed broken PDC sensor Fixed brake pad warning light Fixed broken Sat Nav screen Retrieved Sat Nav code from Audi Replaced cup holder Replaced 'Menu button' Replaced missing Tool kit items It's recent history involves having been with Ian of A8parts at the start of last year, where he carried out a list of restorative work like replacing the sat nav screen etc etc. It had the cambelt, alternator belt, thermostat and waterpump changed in April last year. The previous owner, Paul, had it for a short while and put some good tyres on it. The only issues with it are a small scratch on the front N/S door, and a failed blower motor. The heaters still work and it still demists, it just won't blow your hair about. I'm not sure if it's the motor itself or the HVAC flap control that is doing this. It hasn't stopped me using the car and, as I was (and still am, in some respects) planning on keeping this A8, it's on my 'to do' list. Potentially, on the 'December to do', saying as I held off last month for tax and MOT. The front O/S window motor failed as I was driving it home from the MT centre, and seems to have taken up working intermittently. It's just been MOT'd until 29/11/2013 and I've just taxed it until the end of June 2013. The MOT was passed with no advisories after I had a rear spring replaced at a cost of £165. I'd like £2500 ONO, which is slightly less than I paid for it earlier this year, before taxing it and getting it MOT'd. I may entertain offers, or a P/X towards a small hot hatch like a Peugeot 106 Rallye. Here are a few photos of it, the poor quality iPhone ones taken by me. More photographs can be taken on request. http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...7/Audi/A81.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...7/Audi/A88.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...i/IMG0061A.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...i/DSCF1836.jpg http://i669.photobucket.com/albums/v...diinterior.jpg |
I've decided I do want to sell this now, partly to take the new job when the post comes up again in the summer and partly to indulge in a hot hatch.
I'd like £2500 or offers thereabouts. I am up in Newcastle Upon Tyne/Northumberland, so I may be persuaded to discount a travelling cost off the car. I will of course entertain and reply to all enquiries and offers, so please don't hesitate to get in touch. Alternatively, I may P/X for a good Peugeot 106/306 Rallye. Thanks for looking! Chris |
I have my eye on a nice 106 Rallye not too far from me at the moment. My insurance is up in February, which will mean a renewal on the A8 at approximately £300 more than the Peugeot (£700 for the Audi, £400 for the Peugeot).
Whilst this Rallye is available, I'll lower the price here to £2200. If I miss out on the Rallye, it may go to Ebay once the snow has cleared! |
I'd have been interested in buying this back (I was the mug who spent a grand on the car changing the cambelt, alternator belt, water pump and sold the car at a £500 loss) - though I'd only be ready to buy in the summer. :(
|
As I say, I've not made any real efforts to move it on. And it'll be getting insured again next month so it could well still be here in the summer as I use it as my daily transport. Every time I drive it, I am reminded of it's charms. And it gets me to work in more comfort than the 106 will, and it definitely does it quicker! (the most important aspect!). Unless a replacement 106 Rallye ends up on my drive any time soon, I won't be making any more effort to sell it in the immediate future than I am now.
That said, I've always followed my heart when it comes to cars and the aching beauty of those little homologation specials is drawing me in. I will get one eventually. |
It will also be getting 4 new tyres in the next couple of weeks. I am planning on using Camskill to order them and then get them fitted and balanced somewhere local. Not sure on what brand to go for yet, but it will comfortably knock my plans for getting a 106 Rallye back a couple of months yet, until I feel I've had some value from my new tyres (I still regret selling my MR2 Turbo with four nearly new tyres on them. They could not have had more than 1000 miles on the whole set).
Ah, I suppose there are worse cars to keep in the interim than an A8! |
I fitted 4x Michelin Pilot Super Sports to my RS 6 plus, done 1k miles if that before I sold it. Michelin PSS are the best tyre about really, or try PS2's, and Goodyear Eagle F1 assymetrics.
|
Why spend goodmoney on good tyres if you're going to sell it? I'm sure you won't see any benefit in the selling price

Any advice would be appreciated, from you or anyone for that matter +++ |
There's a fairly recent thread on tyres here: http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/showthread.php?t=980&page=6

I've a mate who swears by Michelins and fits them on all his cars but told me someone (a tyre trader he buys from) had recommended Nexen's as good value for money and a great performance tyre.........I told him I'd try them if he tested them on his R32 first......he declined for some reason ;) I've got a couple of months to decide so I'll continue to research before deciding +++ |

Grip, wet and dry, are what's important to me and what I base my tyre choice on. I can't wait for the crappy Dunlops my C6 came with to die so I can swap for Michelin Pilot Super Sports. |
I like Michelin as a good all round option. I've just replaced a set on our a6 with Continental Sport Contact 5s and been impressed with the lack of road noise and dry grip. Not quite as good in icy conditions but plenty good enough for when its needed
I've not had a positive experience with Goodyear Eagle f1 on the a6 as they wore out on the front very quickly - 10k miles - but on lighter cars I'd say a good choice |

controversially no doubt, I'll suggest part worns of a premum brand.
There are oodles to choose from on Ebay. Avoid anything that has had puncture repairs or has imperfections sure, but anything else should be very useable at a good discount. I've run part worns ever since starting wtih a8parts > 5 years ago and have never had any issues, but saved loads of wonga. The likes of Amar with their uber super starship cruisers with a zillion bhp probably can justify the cost of a grand + on a set of rubber, but for cars falling into the cheaper, lower performance bracket the part worns are a no brainer to me... |

That said, I sold my Impreza and my MR2 Turbo within a short gasp of getting new tyres on them. The MR2 had Nexen's on the back and Uniroyal Rain Experts (or were they Rainsports?) on the front, due to different wheel sizes. Again, the MR2 was well shoed, the Impreza slightly less so. The fitter recommended 'Rotalla' tyres, only slightly cheaper a corner than my usual Falkens, but the Falkens weren't in stock. The Rotallas were a disaster, but that is another story. I'll probably go with Falkens on the A8, as I've been consistently impressed with their tyres and they are a decent compromise between good performance and not breaking the bank for tyres that will have a couple of thousand miles on them when I sell! My plan at the moment is just to lazily save the cash and buy a 106 Rallye at leisure, but making sure to take the time and find the absolute best I can, much the same as I did when I bought this A8. Rallye numbers are starting to hit rock bottom now, and I really want to get one and enjoy it and ultimately preserve it. It's a car I would like to have in 20 years time, so I can show my kids how great cars used to be, in the same way as I will bend their ears and tell them I was driving a V8 before I was 25, and I expect the same effort from them! :D |
Just stuck some Falken FK452s on the front of mine, and they seem good so far, not sure about dry grip as it's it's been raining here all week :)

But then again, it's a matter of personal taste and experience, I just know in my case I won't be trying them again. |
Thanks for the responses, plenty to think about. I have mates who buy part worns and I'd consider it but in this case I just want to go the job right and fit brand new tyres on my refurbished wheels, to finish the job off properly. I think having them refurbished and fitted with new caps then putting part worn tyres on would be like treating myself to an Armarni suit then wearing it with scuffed shoes ;)
I'm keeping the sport wheels for autumn/winter and only intending to use the 20" wheels for summer but I suppose that means considering how they perform in the wet judging by our recent summers. I'll say nothing more and you can view my choice at a meet sometime this year ;) |

A perfect example of personal preference, you have every reason to buy premium tyres because you drive cars with phenomenal power and performance, and why not. You think Dunlops are crap but I think they're great, but that's because I've had Falkens......as I said each to their own. Vredestein tyres have been mentioned a few times now so I'll include them as a possible option, thanks! +++ |
Hmm, I've always found Falkens pretty good, but then that has been on lightweight performance cars, nothing like an A8 sized uber-cruiser.
http://www.camskill.co.uk/m61b0s315p...5_18_245_45R18 This is the page I am looking at for selections. I had thought of the Falken Azenis tyres. The Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas and the Continental Contisportcontact5's aren't much more. I'll go with one of those, I think. Never driven on a bad Continental in my time... |
Definitely personal preference... I had Nankangs on one of my '8s and found them OK, but I rarely drive at the limit and when I do, I don't mind a bit of controllable slide :)

If I was selling in 3-4 months, I wouldn't be thinking of shelling out for four new 20" tyres. At the upper end (admittedly), 4 Michelin PS3s would cost upward of a grand, which is not far short of 50% of the value of the car. You'd not get half of that investment back again - so that would effectively be costing you c.£200/month for the tyres.
I'd get 4 (good) part-worns from DM tyres (see tyre thread..), and run on them - they wouldn't take much work to look reasonably new - and when you come to sell, I'm not sure the buyer would see much difference. Sorry if that sounds a bit like a tight Scotsman :D, but I'd be saving my pennies to invest in my next car, which you'll get more of a return on (assuming you keep it for a while). However, the above is just a personal opinion, and - having just shelled out £3k on my gearbox - I admit that logic doesn't always come into it :o |
A few good part worns might be an idea. Will DM Tyres post the tyres or not? Obviously I can't ring and find out as they are closed, and Oldham is a bit far to go for a pickup!
|
Yes DM will courier tyres to you. http://dmtyres.co.uk/index.html
|
Just search around for part worns locally. Since making 320 mile round trip to DM tyres in 2011 I have found out that several local places sell part worn tyres at similar prices here. Only thing is that they have a lot less turnaround and therefore less of a choice and harder to get 4 matching tyres. But they are available if you do not mind buying in pairs. Prices are £25 each for 15" tyres and £5 more for each inch of diameter up to £45 for 19" including mounting and balancing. Have not asked about 20" but I assume they would be £50. You get decent tyres with 6-7mm of tread, just need to look at manufacturing dates yourself to make sure you don't get too old tyres.
|
Considering my RS 6 did 196 MPH (GPS verified) at the last Vmax event on a shortened runway, I can't risk part worns as I'm going back and trying on a full runway soon. I can see the appeal of part worns, you make some massive savings, maybe someone will buy my Dunlop Sport Maxx GT's (275/35/20's) and I can get some more Michelin Pilot Supersports (£1,300ish) eek. I'm a sucker for tyres.

re:part worns
Personally, I was quite happy with part worn pirrellis at 275 35 20....they are a soft tyre so are meant wear quicker, but I quite happily did about 20000 miles on them and didnt really have any issues.
Plus I was getting them at 60 quid a pop with about 6 mm....so that was a set of four for 250 max....brand new you are looking at a grand....which was a saving I was more than happy to make. And to be realistic, in terms of everyday driving you are very unlikely to go above 90mph....unless you hate your licence. |
Well, I had some bad news last night. I had mooted a move of department at work over on Pistonheads a while back, which tied in with my plans to buy a 106 Rallye and live the 'small car' life. The plan was, come summer, I would have my rubber stamped application in the department manager's hand and I'd be off to a new site, and a new role.
I was told on Monday night that on said department, a team was being disbanded and a new one was being scrambled from all the other teams. One man from every shift to be drafted to the new team on the department, in the very near future. I was picked from my shift to go. Good news and bad news, as I'm honoured to be the man with the shoulders wide enough and the balls big enough to take the job. Bad news as the site has a car park the size of a shoebox, on street parking is a no no and cycling is not an option. I'm left in a quandry now. My plan was to buy a 106 Rallye, which I will still do, but the A8 needs to move sharpish. Because I could be starting at the new site sooner than I think, and the wife's car won't be available for long. |
And it's away! One of the best barges I've had the pleasure of driving too. 7 Series, LS400, S Class...forget it! A8 is the one!

If I had not bought mine last month I would of had that off you straight away for the money.

1999 a8 d2 4.2
Well this thing changes hands quicker than a hot potato....and I have decided to move it on....so it is on ebay.....I can't think why it has never stayed with one owner for long....personally it has been a joy to own temporarily and I have done numerous trips around the country....
These include....trips from Newcastle to Skegness....Skegness to Rochdale (the 50 zone on the m62 is to be avoided at all cost especially at night when there is a diversion into Leeds)...an recently a trip to Lincoln and Doncaster. Since I have owned it i have fixed the driver side window which was a switch/replaced the fresh air blower motor/and fixed a brake fluid leak.....it still has about a months tax and mot until November. I have it on ebay at a buy it now of 2500, but am happy to reduce that for a forum member.... Oh I replaced the avus wheels with the Monoblocks for a slightly more standard look and comfort ride. If interested get in touch 07525747277. Only selling to make space for a diesel convertible. |
Not keen on the new wheels to be honest!
Was a lovely car when I had it despite the minor issues. Only major issue I had was the alternator belt coming off. I paid for that to be sorted along with the cambelt / waterpump / thermostat, then foolishly sold at a loss not including the cost of the cambelt etc. :-( Wish I could buy from a mug like me :D :D Good luck with the sale. +++ |
Alloys
I agree the wheels seen everyone's cup of tea....but noted that the spare was standard and wanted the original wheels back on just out curiosity.....I have to say though drove up north last night in the pouring rain and it felt so sure footed and gracefully....absolutely awesome to drive.....I especially like the Bose it has to be the best I have experienced in any d2.
|
Reduced for quick sale
I have now reduced the buy it now to 1800 for quick sale....but will certainly consider offers close to that from forum members.
