What '8's have you driven?

Let's see who has driven the most! Ian/Dave & A8 parts & co, I'll be very impressed if you can remember all the ones you've driven. I've driven quite a few which includes the D2, D3 and D4 and even a D2 S8 manual! Another dull fact for you all is that I drove my first when I was only about 14!

Right, these are the ones I can remember driving, and the list is in no particular order. Can anyone, other than Ian/A8 Parts top this? Ian, please put yours down too, just be aware, they don't count! +++

1. D2 '96 A8 4.2 quattro Sport PF
2. D2 '97 A8 4.2 quattro Sport PF
3. D2 '98 A8 4.2 quattro Sport PF LPG
4. D2 '01 S8 FL
5. D2 '99 A8 3.7 quattro FL
6. D2 '00 A8 A8 4.2 quatrro Sport FL with S8 configuration, LPG, FL
7. D2 '02 S8 FL
8. D2 S8 Final Edition FL
9. D2 '00 S8 quattro, Manual! FL

11. D4 '12 A8 3.0 TDI quattro SE

And I haven't driven 1 :-(

But I have driven most of everything else from an austin woolsey princess through to a7!
But I DO WANT a pearl a/s8 D2 :p

IT 17th December 2012 05:27 PM

Crumbs. Seriously. I'd be here for weeks.

I should start with a simple list of how many forum members cars I've owned, and then how many of them have visited me, and working up to how many of them I've driven, and then umpteen pages from now, I could start to fill in the blanks of all the ones I've driven that were nothing to do with forum or a8parts... :D

That'll take a while, So, i'm gonna touch on some special ones instead:

1) 2001 Silver 4.2 QS, Glass sunroof, Nav, TV, Blinds, Heated Rears, Xenons plus, towbar, audi warranty. Yes. Audi warranty. My first a8 @ 99,000 miles and a wee 3.5 years old. I'll never forget her....

2) Martine - 2000 Ming Blue A/S8 stripped and rebuilt with almost every option ;) Sold to Amar. Now with Gordon.

3) My old D3 3.0 Tdi which is currently for sale. Thats still an unbelievably good combo of toys and MPG. I miss that B&O dreadfully...

4) Matt - My Ming Blue PF D3 4.2. The first D3 I had. Alcantara pack, radar cruise, glass sunroof. It was a good spec that, not sure why I sold it.. <doh>

5) Daves W12. Couldnt not put that on here. Its quite something else. Still annoys me the massage seats turn off after about 10 mins.... +++

6) Botang/Tobys track car the day they collected it. An ultra stripped A8 4.2 lightweight with 4 speed box and a lot of go....

7) My first PF S8, 1997. Lots of options, but wasnt hugely noteworthy on its own. However, it manage to get me down a TV shoot in leeds with Penny Mallory for the day

8) The Pearl. You know the one. Just ask Amanda lol. For a 15 year old car, it drives incredibly fresh. And the way the sunlight hits the paintwork when its sat still, its quite remarkable really. You can really feel the PF throttle cable being more responsive than this drive by wire stuff.. Another TV star too +++

9) Johns Manual Left hooker S8 before he sold it. I'm not sure what was weirder, driving from the passenger side, or using my clutch foot in an 8. +++

10) Tintins black final edition S8 has to get a mention. Not only was it the lowest mileage S8 I've ever driven, its probably the very best colour combination for the D2 S8. At 23000 miles it was barely run in, and felt incredibly tight as I drove it half way across the country. As a bonus, it'd been owned by an elderly gent and had suffered the 'no kickdown from the factory' problem, so really was like brand new.....

11) Richards 4.2 Tdi. Crumbs thats quick. Nuff said.

12) Various front wheel drive 2.8 and 3.7 PF cars. It is a funny sensation driving two wheel drive in an 8, the skittish front end lifting slightly under full throttle.... You should try it.

13) Gordon - My old dolphin grey S8. That was a beautiful car. I love the colour, and the spec, and that it was my 30th birthday present to myself +++ - Most of all, its the only car I've ever been in on the 155 mph limiter, and annoyingly, I wasnt driving at the time so still cant claim to have driven at 155.

14) John. A 1996 4 speed 4.2 QS. The first ever car I dismantled. Silver, full black leather interior. Blinds, electric rears, head lamp wash, solar sunroof, bose etc. With hindsight, it was a bit of a shame but hey it was the sole creater and cause of a8parts, so it was a small sacrifice really.

15) Frank. Once Mine, now owned by Ollie. A lovely example of a standard, non sport early facelift which Ollie (quite annoyingly) has since enhanced into one of the best looking, subtley modded D2's out there... +++

16) Eddy. A 1997 PF S8, Black, UK registered, German dealer supplied. Had rear blinds, but no side blinds. Sports spec. RS4 brakes all round. Coilovers, Full Facelift instrument cluster, climate panel, switchgear. RNS-E, Bluetooth, solar roof. That was some project car that.... Probably shouldnt have dismantled that either...

And, the ones I notably have never driven. All offers gratefully received:

D2 W12
D2 Diesel (well, not one that could get over 5 mph anyway)
D2 Long wheel base (yes, seriously... I've never been in one that drives)
D3 S8 (I've come really, close, but not driven one yet....!)
D4 anything

Singh 17th December 2012 05:45 PM

You drove my Cactus D2 S8 too, Ian. In 09 when I had all the extras fitted by A8 Parts.

And you've driven my racing 8 too Amar, tho not very far. It probably scared you a little being such a race machine

Singh 18th December 2012 06:07 PM

Dezzy's too then, so that is 12! Not bad. I felt the need to prove myself seeing as I don't directly own an '8 any more, to be fair, I am in the D4 pretty much everyday and a lot more than I am my RS 6.

Reffro 19th December 2012 04:16 PM

Much shorter list for me.

My old D2 FL S8
Darren's D2 FL S8 and D3 W12 Swb
D3 4.2 Petrol & 4.0 Tdi Swb and Lwb - at dealers whilst trying to decide what to buy before I choose my D2.
D3 4.2 Tdi Swb - at a dealer, got bored and fancied a run in one.

That is all.

HPsauce 19th December 2012 04:28 PM

Even shorter here:
D2 1998 S8 (current car)
D3 4.0TDi (brand new, 2004, loaner from Audi for about 6 months, huge options list)

And what's wrong with that

Singh 19th December 2012 07:31 PM

Bloody impressive list, Guy!! Yeah, it's an animal, it nearly lost me my license on Sunday, recorded at 66% over the limit. Luckily the copper was in a good mood. :o

Singh 19th December 2012 07:46 PM

I did this in the soaking wet, with a passenger, 0-60 in 4 secs dead and 0-100 in 9.6! I kept getting wheel spin or I'm confident I could get it down to 3.8 and 9.3. That's faster than most supercars DB9's etc... Proof below, the Pbox is the most accurate way of getting 0-60, 0-100 times and is what motor manufactures use.

sarg 20th December 2012 12:53 AM

I also have only ever driven 2

1. D2 3.7 QS which I test drove when first looking - I found it a bit under-powered (sorry :p)
2. D2 4.2 QS bought October 2006, scrapped June 2011

daviesbike 20th December 2012 01:04 AM

i was talking to reffro about your rs6 amar and he said it was savage to drive blisteringly quick ... im sure it would mate my W12 look like it was standing still.... im having it re mapped soon hoping for about 480 ish bhp and about 650nm i think ... no where near your RS6 figures lol but im sure it will improve it a touch

so ... about that drive amar .... haha +++

Singh 20th December 2012 07:53 AM

Yeah, you're welcome to have a drive buddy, you know where I am just give me a heads up if you're in the area and I'll let you know if I'm free. Reffro drove it when it was standard at 480/660, now it's different animal at 535/844. The W12 actually felt slow when I drove it (which of course it isn't) it's a mixture of a little more refinement and a little less power than my plus.
Here's what happened when Darren challenged me in his W12.

Norretal 31st December 2012 10:24 AM

Just the three for me, a 52 plate black S8 which was fantastic and nearly tempted me into spending £25k (it was around 8 years ago) followed by the PF 4.2 QS which I still own. The only other was a 2007 S8 with B&O etc and very low miles which I promised myself (it was owned by a dealer friend) but it went up for sale just after we'd spent a fortune on the house, so alas I missed it.

I'll own one one day.

Oh, and he's a car dealer before you ask.......;)

plankton 11th February 2013 08:41 AM

Just driven one - my old D2 4.2 V8.

That's the only Audi I've ever driven. I think it's the only Audi I've ever sat in as well!

Goran 26th February 2013 08:01 PM

I have just driven one too, my S8 D2. I bought the first one I saw so didnt test drive any others.
Only other Audi I drove was a rented A4 1.8t auto in Switzerland, that was quite good too.

Ben_3.0v6 14th September 2013 07:19 PM

Sadly a big fat "0" just joined up to do some research on them always wanted one since watching the transporter but never had the money to buy one, and I've only just turned 25 to insured on one. :) but there's never any harm in window shopping lol

HPsauce 14th September 2013 08:17 PM

Just to update this, add my current D2 2003 S8, so that's 3 I've driven a fair bit.
And thinking about it I've probably driven 3 or 4 others (all S8's) when looking to buy.

The 1998 S8 which I had for nearly 11 years was, I discovered recently, an ex Audi marketing car used at the Motor Show in 1998, it is now owned by IT.
