D2 FL MOD: Pre-FL switches fit perfectly in the dashboard blank
1 Attachment(s)
Discovered great stuff today: Pre-FL switches fit perfectly in the dashboard blank provided.
This opens for me whole new scope :) I can have a switch to blink fog lights independently of headlights or parking lights.... http://i1217.photobucket.com/albums/...g?t=1311991508 No... better idea! When I finish installation of my Hormann garage doors I can put there a blinds switch and open garage doors: http://www.audipages.com/upgrades/garagedrinstall.html Blinds switch pictogram actually looks like a garage door :) http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1369610248 |
Wish I had a garage door, I'd do that for sure.

I love it when a plan comes together! +++

Garage open/close door button installed in dash.
http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1369920781 No automated garage doors yet though... But we'll get there. |
Great job and brilliant idea! +++
Is this where the headlight adjustment would have been? |
Yep. Any Pre-FL button can be installed there.
Those pre-FL buttons are great -- better to touch than FL ones. |
Hmmm....very interesting. I too have a Hormann door, but didn't know you could do this with the '8, but very keen to find out now. Then I can keep the two existing remotes with the other cars :-)
|
Have you opened this link http://www.audipages.com/upgrades/garagedrinstall.html ? It allows to remove button from any remote and connect the 8 button.
Hotmann supplies one button thing that you can insert into cigarette lighter. Organise a cigarette lighter for it somewhere under trim and connect 8 button with horman thing via methodology in the link. |

Buy Hormann BiSecur HSZ 1 BS cigarette lighter transmitter. It comes with quality build-in lithium 3v battery, which will last many years http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1380999329 Turn head of transmitter and it will open. If it won't just help a bit with a thin flat screwdriver. http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1380999329 On a small circuit there's a pushbutton. Take sharp knife and pry it off. No even need to desolder. http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1380999329 You will see two rectangular poles which the pushbutton connects together when pressed. http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1380999329 Take your soldering iron and just solder two wires to those poles. Now if you want to open/close/stop door you need to connect those wires together. http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1380999329 Case goes back on http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1380999329 Wires are fixed with a cable tie http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1380999329 The whole thing is wrapped with 3M insulation tape and then with Certoplast. Final product is placed behind fuse panel in driver footrest. There's plenty of space there and good access when I'll need to change battery in 15 years. http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1380999329 Other end of wires are connected to pushbutton on dashboard. Works beautifully. http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1380999329 P.S. If you don't know what soldering iron is I'd suggest to purchase Hormann recessed radio transmitter called 'FUS 2' which has screwdriver terminals. http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1381000453 It is designed for in-house installation to control garage doors from your home with a domestic light switch. It can run from a 9v battery and can control two doors. http://www.torteam24.de/2-kanal-funk...-2-p-2223.html Just connect button on your dash with FUS 2 terminals and you're done. FUS 2 is bigger than cigarette lighter transmitter and perhaps wasn't tested for car use by Hormann, but I'm sure it won't be a problem. Just find a place to hide it under the dash. |
Great write up! I wish I had garage now! This is a great mod.

I believe that button (rear blind) is an instantaneous "closed while pressed" type.
I'm thinking of using that blank space for an accessory button myself and though the logo is quite appropriate I "think" I may need a "push-on, push-off" latching type, just for a simple (signalling) circuit carrying a very low current. Are any of the other normal PF buttons better for that function and can you swap the tops over between them? I don't even need any lighting in it. I've got a rear blind button on its way to me (from A8parts of course) but may need to upgrade the mechanism, depending on the results of further testing - the button with the equipment is a "latching" one but of a hugely inappropriate design, though initial tests do suggest it doesn't really need to latch. |

Funny thing is, the switch blanking plate has all the lugs on the back to connect to a wiring socket. |
BTW, instead of trying to attach separate wires to the back of your button you can get the female connector 'backplate' for your button from Audi or from A8parts. I had an old loom from FL car and I found out that backplate connector from seat heating buttons will work with my 'garage open/close button' too.
