Keyless entry button on door handle not working

Hi, Recently bought my D3 A8 4.2TDI and noticed that the button on the rear nearside door will not operate the locking the other three are fine, any suggestions as to what the problem is likely to be? a complete door handle? or maybe just a new switch? and how difficult a job to fix? any help much appreciated, regards Dave

Is the child lock turned on on that door? Not sure if it affects the locking button though.

If not, it's a door-card off job and swap the button for a new one (or replacement from A8parts).

Cheers Psyche, Will check that first,

Ignore me... For some reason I was thinking of the button on the inside... I'll crawl back into my hole again.

Yes, your button has probably failed, I know that the previous owner of mine had to replace the rear offside one. It's still a doorskin off job I think.

Door has to be stripped down, not a job for the DIY'er

Easier to lock the car using the next nearest button

Somerandomguy 12th October 2013 03:30 PM

Nah, it's a DIY job, i have done both front and rear and this was one of the first jobs when I got mine.

To replace the handles, you need to remove the door cards (buy a few spare clips before hand), remove the inner mounting plate, disconnect the wiring and door lock lnkage (this is the trickiest part) and loosen the retaining frame to extract the handle from the exterior. there is a post of mine on vwaudiforum with a couple of PDFs from ETKA. http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/s...471#post789471

The hardest part was getting replacement handles, which I ended up buying from German ebay for a total of €110 for a set of all 4 in the correct colour. The search term I used was before the loss of the wildcard search: A8 Türgriff* (don't forget the umlaut on the u), and then just trawled through the search results looking for the tell-tale button.

I guess it took me about 2 hours per handle, and i think i only used a couple of different tools, a 10mm deep socket, a pry tool for the door card and some torx drivers (t30 or 27 and t15 i think)

Cheers, Thanks for the good info bought my new handle and with your help will give it a go! cheers Dave

Dave

did you manage to do this? +++

I think mine has gone on the driver's side.. the button seems to have lost it's "flex" so when you touch it, it has nothing to press? if that makes sense..

interested to know where you got the handle from and how much? was it the whole handle? can you not just buy and replace the button in the middle?

I had this problem with the drivers door on my 2006 D3 when I bought it. The nearside rear passenger door went next so with nothing to lose I gave it a good squirt with WD40 and it works! I gave the long dead drivers door the same treatment and normal service has been resumed. Don't bother taking it all apart until you have tried this.

Two of mine started getting water behind and would make a squishy sound when pressed. One of them didn't work most of the time. This would also freeze hard under the silicone button when below freezing. One day I used a silicone spray with a straw on and jetted it into the gap while jabbing the button and then wiped off the excess. It started to work again, but recently started getting water behind so will do again.

I've experienced this issue on my car too. I'm new to A8 ownership, this is my first, which I've had for a few months now. The drivers door button was not responding at all and so I was contemplating total removal, etc. Then I discovered this thread, gave the WD40 thing a go and I have since had intermittent function :)
Then, this morning, a below zero frost meant that the button was frozen solid, they all were .

Recently I've been thinking about more WD40, to be then followed through with compressed air to blow out any residual debris, from the switch assembly.
I'm also wondering if the switch/handle assembly may have a drain hole, which over time, may have become blocked. I'll look underneath, next time I'm looking into the button issue.

Mine needs doing again on the front passenger side.
It is so annoying. Pushed for time to spend on the car at the moment though.

They are poorly designed on the pre 2010 cars. I had one go on a 2008 3.0 tdi and had an independant fix it. New handle and paint. To be honest I would just leave it now. Especially since that independant 'Audi specialist' in Stockport made a total pigs ear of it. It went back four times as the handle came off in my hand. In the end, a main dealer did it for me foc.

On my 2009 s8 both doors on the near side handle buttons have failed but they were done on audi warrantee.

Same problem here , button on rear drivers side is solid.
Its even worst , when I use any of the other buttons to lock the car it automatically unlocks.
Any advice ?

Duffy 5th August 2015 10:46 AM

Are these handles sided or are they the same all round?

Thanks!

mattylondon 5th August 2015 10:59 AM

The handles are the same all round x3 passengers, the drivers handle has a different part number.

Thank you

This is a job i need to do on the A8 I just picked up. Drivers unlock button does not work.

VSDS throws up an error on the drivers door which is the one that does not work but after reading a thread a few hours ago I was amazed to find out that they handle should also act as a prox sensor.

I have been lifting the handle once to unlock and then again to open.

I didnt understand until I went out to the car and placed my hand under the rear handle and the car unlocked and then just lifted the handle once to open,

is this linked to the dodgy lock button or a seperate issue,

If i can find a handle in the same colour and replace is the prox sensor part of the handle assembly or a seperate part,

Thanks

matt

Just got my passenger lock button working again using this I 'borrowed' from work...
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/271801783112

I can't believe my post above was in January and I put up with it for over 9 months. I used the straw and blasted it at point-blank range repeated all around the gap between the grey silicone rectangle and chrome. It started working after a few seconds. I jabbed the button a few times during the procedure but it started to freeze my fingers. It leaves no residue and I also did the undersides of the handle for the unlock function.

Now all four lock every time. Unlock only seems available on the front handles, so maybe I was wrong thinking I had intermittent problem with needing to lift the handle twice. Maybe it was just when I tried the rear handles. Can anyone one confirm if the rear handles do a proximity unlock or only handle-lift unlock?

I did finish with ECP http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/p/Ac...897322&cc5_152
Silicone spray with eurocarparts in the hope of keeping water out of the buttons.

Thanks.

Both mine on the drivers side was not working , I sprayed them with similar contact cleaner to the link and I got them working a treat , but when it rains they tend to play up again , they mustn't have much resistance to water ingress

If someone has an old one that is scrap it would be interesting if they could cut out the button and see what is underneath.

I'd like to see that too. In fact if someone sends it to me, I will perform the section.

I found the 3 bolts that release the chrome piece.

This was with the handle on the car however, so I didnt take them all off.
