D3 S8 Project Thread

Well, seeing as Oli started one, and it seems like a good idea I thought I'd copy him +++

To be fair, this S8 is in fairly good condition generally. The underside is remarkably clean, and it does seem overall to be very original.

As ever, theres a few things on every new owners to do list:

1) MOT
2) Fix leaking screenwash
3) Straighten out B&O speaker grills that are mashed in
4) Replace faulty center dash speaker
5) fit AMI
6) Upgrade MMI to later version
7) Fix a an issue with the engine Camshaft positioner
8) Handbrake shows intermittent fault
9) VIM
10) Facelift rear lights (due to peer pressure lol)
11) Gearbox oil change
12) Full service
13) Fit Fridge ?
14) Find a way to grow my own dinosaurs, so I can turn them into petrol to keep this thing fuelled at a sensible cost :p

1) Done this morning. Few slightly worn suspension advisories, but otherwise all good +++
2) Thanks to a8parts, a rubber o-ring on the headlight jet was replaced and shes sealed tight now and holding water.
3) Not started yet. Door card off job, but shouldnt be too bad ?
4) Got speaker, hope to do this afternoon
5) Done
6) Done
7) Pending a bit more bravery
8) Pending it becoming a real problem
9) Done
10) On with.
11) Looks tricky due to complex exhaust on S8. But will be done.
12) Will treat it shortly
13) Still miss my fridge so if I can find a cheap one, its in
14) Not sure where to start on this one...... ;)

Wow you don't hang about do you.

Took me a week just to get round to VIM :)

Ian.. There was a good documentary a few years ago for number 14... One of the Attenboroughs was in it.. Showed growing a few variants, might be a start.. Can't remember the full name though..Jurassic something.

There's a disco near me that's favoured by women of an older age, which is known locally as Jurassic Park, might be a place to start............?

Oli

I'll have you know, I just washed it. Top to bottom. And dried it too. It'll get completely caked up on the way down tonight, so I'll take a photo before I set off to prove it :p

If it wernt for ADI, I'd be a bit more patient lol.

Center Speaker done, back to sounding like a masterpiece, rather than a childs music player turned up too loud....

CPS repair

Hi Ian,

I had a CPS fault on my S8 and took it to the stealers for a warranty repair. Had a CEL and VCDS copied in below. Took a while with warranty company and some parts were not in stock so took it away for a few days and drove it after confirming it wouldn't harm engine.. Definite lowering of performance and a woofly sound rather than a wail from engine. Then blow me, the CEL went out by itself. Chat on one of teh US fourums suggested dirt in the oil which got stuck in the variable valve timing filter. I still had stealer change it as a precaution. However, before you commit check out parts prices

CPS - £69
Gasket (cam cover one) - £153!!
Coupling - £2

Labour 3 hours - £246. With VAT nearly £500!

Good luck

Thanks Richard. Mine has cleared the fault itself once, and come back. I'm not unduly concerned at the moment. I find it staggering it could sound any better, or go any better if I fixed it though...wow.... +++

Its on my 'when I get a moment' pile.... ;)

10, 11 and 12 all done.

She feels far more fruity for having had a full service. Plugs were pretty poor, oil was black and filters were well past it. It really does go better now which I find astonishing..... +++

Gearbox is so much smoother now, and it does look way more modern with its facelift rear light clusters on :D

I should really be thinking about selling it by now but it is rather addictive.... ;)

Good stuff Ian, was the box fluid change a painless experience?

Oli18 24th January 2014 06:34 PM

Looks awesome Ian +++

What else is on the list to do?... Looks like your list is almost done!

The list must have been completed Oli, he sold it two months later ;)

So glad he did mind, it's an awesome car, despite it's thirst and some initial problems. I'd struggle to find a car as enjoyable to own and drive.

Norretal 28th June 2015 04:51 PM

I haven't yet found the solution to the insatiable appetite for V Power this thing has but at least I got 380 miles out of a tankful this weekend :)

Average speed of 60mph over those miles, DIS showed 22.5mpg, actual was 21.2mpg. Doesn't sound much but I wasn't hanging about and those miles were almost entirely motorway, and the consumption was significantly better than the 15mpg I see when using the car around the doors +++

Architex_mA8tey 28th June 2015 05:10 PM

That's not too bad at all Ron - must be down to how slow you were going!! :D
If you're gonna keep up with us 3.7 owners you will have to step it up a bit!!

Norretal 28th June 2015 05:24 PM

Can't complain Neil, had to smile at an average of 60mph over 380 miles, steady progress was made ;)

I used sport mode on the A69, such a pleasurable road, and aptly numbered if you're driving an S8

tonupkid 28th June 2015 11:37 PM

Ron.
After a full wheel alignment at Audi a few months ago, the economy of My D3 S8 improved and I'm regularly seeing 25 mpg on a 100 mile round trip, with a mix of dual carriageway, M1 and urban.
I use V Power and I don't hang about.

Interesting observation fella, I'm sure my wheels are properly aligned (even tyre wear all round) but I'll make sure an alignment is done when I change the tyres after a wheel refurb, which needs to happen soon. I start every journey with good intentions but as soon as the opportunity arises I can't resist hammering it, and that makes any thoughts of economy fly out of the window. The idea of getting nearly 450 miles out of a tank of V Power seems surreal :)

tonupkid 29th June 2015 05:07 PM

My tyres had no feathering and have always work evenly, but I've always found this 8 to be fidgety. I put that down to the lack of tyre wall and abundant tyre width, but when it got more twitchy I gave it a go, and its improved more than the mpg:-)
I'm with you on the good intentions, and for me Its the bellowing exhausts that chuck them out of the window. That noise is Irresistible and addictive. The sound of money burning
