Depressing Market
So I was with a mate from work today, as he is looking for a nice second hand motor (can't get him into 8's unfortunately, the wife won't have it)
Anyway while in a dealer in Rochdale where he was looking at a SAAB convertible - the dealer took particular interest in my car. "Alot of people are selling those, no one wants a big car these days" Just aswell I am not selling then.. I replied. Out of curiousity though, I asked for the book price to trade my car in. Ok, Hi miles (159k now), 2.8.. but in good condition, plenty of extras (if you know your Audi's) What depressing figure do you think he told me I would get!? Nearest gets a hotdog bought by me at the meeting in June. |
£900? BTW I'm a vegetarian :D
|
sellyourcar.com offered me £1125 for mine when I was curious so I'm guessing £725.
By the way Singh my neighbour has a vets practice, where will you set yours up? City or Country? |
500 quid :(
Got offered 700 by sellyourcar for mine :'( |
ermmm. . . . £650 :(
Im getting depressed at this game!!! |
£600 and a packet of monster munch?
|
Bugger..... Forgot the monster munch ploy! :)
|
strangely though the online car price guides value bottom trade at £1500-2000 so if it is as low as we all think then how do they account for the difference? I thought they were supposed to be the experts!
|
Hmm - should imagine it will be something scary.
I'll be upbeat with my guess though £1.2K +++ |
The HarperSimon A8 Hotdog Stakes. . . current betting
List of current guesses -
Singh £900 Conan £725 Psyche £500 Architex_mA8tey £650 MkOneMan £600 + Monster Munch Gninnam £1200 |
Hehe, just took a high powered V8 drive to the M40 services to invest in some Monster Munch, any excuse :D
|
£865......wouldn't want to even ask anyone what they'd offer for mine :(
|
Singh £900
Conan £725 Psyche £500 Architex_mA8tey £650 MkOneMan £600 + Monster Munch Gninnam £1200 A8 Tony £865 |
I'm taking a very cynical view here:
Singh £900 Conan £725 Psyche £500 Architex_mA8tey £650 MkOneMan £600 + Monster Munch Gninnam £1200 A8 Tony £865 Oli18 £450 |
I like the way hes building the suspense, where are you Simon!? :p
|
Depreciation only matters if you're selling. I ain't sellin'! Ever!
I'll take a guess at £850 |
800 quid
|
Singh £900
Conan £725 Psyche £500 Architex_mA8tey £650 MkOneMan £600 + Monster Munch Gninnam £1200 A8 Tony £865 Oli18 £450 Bluewhale £850 entwisi £800 |
I was waiting for a decent range, and thus decent comp - no point blowing the answer out after three guesses
1. I am surprised how close everyone is to be fair.. like we all know there is no value left in them (unless they are highly desired versions like Mkoneman and some other 2. Now I am really depressed, and will take the monster munch. Hotdog goes to...... ..... Bluewhale - on the nose. Eight hundred and fifty of your trade pounds, if you will. He spend ages thumbing a glasses guide or similar, to tell me 'oh, its at the back its so old isn't it.. ' Then " well they only list one at 90k.. so.. er.. maths never my strong point.. I am giving money away.. blah blah.. £850' Bloody hell :-( |
:-( I feel your pain man - still the plus is..... you might as well hang on to it as its worth more to you than that!! :-)
|
OUCH:tuttut:
Been looking at R8's and they have dropped alot - can get a 2007 plate for 55K - were around 75K new - big drop in 24 months I believe |
Hi there,
I've missed the hot dog, but it would be almost worth stripping it and selling for parts....Ian ??? I'm kinda glad they are quite cheap....otherwise i wouldn't have bought mine...But they are *VERY* good value for money....probably because not many people even know what an A8 / S8 is. However, all that luxury, all that power, all that aluminium (so doesn't rust) and on LPG and of a reasonable age its cheap tax and good to run  Lee |
Oh I am not about to sell, as I mentioned I was looking with a friend and got curious.. even less inclined now as I am seemingly only able to trade in against a Microwave.
(with Rottiserie feature) I have stereo speakers worth more than this car !! |
They did have a nice Bi-Turbo Toyota Supra though.. does that make me bi curious?
|
I WON!!! GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLL!:D
I wish I was as lucky with the lottery. Can I have mustard and tomato sauce on the hotdog Ta.;) Seriously though, the trade in prices for these cars is a joke, especially if they're getting on in years. I'm pretty sure this car will be a future classic due to the numbers produced , the Club scene which is rapidly gaining momentum and the care and time the owners put into maintaining these great cars.+++ |
It's like any car.. once they hit a certain age, they don't know how to deal with depreciation.. It's still scary when someone offers you more than you know you'd get for the parts though :(

A monkey!
The bloke plainly wasn't into your car judging from his opening comments. I sold a 1996 4.2 for 2000 quid, cash, earlier this year. I still know guys in the car trade and at least up here in Scotland the market is much firmer than you might expect. I hope you told him to blow his price out his arse! Ooopsy........just found page 2! |
Oh bugger,,,,:-(,,,i just broght a A8 4.2 Quattro for just over £3,000 with a warranty form a dealer....and now its worth less than George Micheals diggnity...:(:(:(
But i dont care as everytime i shut that clunking solid door and slide into my sporty black leather seats, turn the key and hear that kitten under the bonnet puuuuuuuuuuuring......i no i purchased the right car.....oh yeah.. (obviously depending on my lill oil leak being sorted out) |
Grim news - I take back the 'I'm not selling' post and have to report .... that over the weekend after being offered £1500 I took the bait and sold her on. I know I know you will all want to set fire to my house now, but its 165k on the clock and counting, has had NO issues making me think I am in for one soon, needs a good service anc cambelt, neither of which I can afford to do right now for a car I don't use all the time since company car.. and as I am about to change jobs and pay for my own fuel, economically the time was right. Only a 2.8 but when you do 55k a year, filling up every other day it adds up.
Suffice to say enjoyed the time here, and will be back when I get the next one! (will look in now and then to see whats what no doubt!) |
Right boys....
I'll cancel his account - Tony, bar him from the meets.. Now, wheres the matches ? :D Shame to hear you've moved her on, and by the sounds of it, not replacing it either. £1500 is probably not a bad price right now in fairness, and it sounds like it made sense to move it on... :( |
I take it that means thebluewhale is not getting his hot dog at the meet? :tuttut: LOL well im sure conan will say it but. . . you'll be beckkk. . :p
|
In a similar vein.. I did a crazy thing at the weekend and have bought meself a new motor :(
It's a D3 :) 4.2Q SE with Sport suspension & seats, lots of toys and adaptive cruise (which really tipped it). Picking her up on Saturday, 53 plate with 36k on the clock. They offered me a grand for it which I thought was OK-ish for a trade in, but... Even better new is. I've presuaded the missus that it's more economically viable with the mileage she does to keep the D2 for her and punt her Vectra! Anyone want to buy one? 06 plate 1.8 design with 22k on the clock in Navy Blue :D |
Two 8s. No that's just greedy. But rather cool as well. Will they both be at the meet?
|
What! No Hotdog! Ian, I'm with you where's the matches :D |

We can probably find you someone willing to drive the D3 so you can drive your D2
Now, form an orderely queue folks  |
