MMI 2G DVD nav disc

My newly acquired D3 has the original 2003 navigation DVD installed. I acquired a 2013 ISO but all I get is check Navigation DVD error when I put it in. I only had a dual layer disc to hand, so used that burnt at the slowest speed I could on my MAC.

Should I just give up, or try a different DVD media?.

limoncello 12th December 2013 12:30 PM

That isnt enough for these disks, you need certain types of burner that are able to change the bookmark type to DVD-ROM or it wont work also has to be a good quality DVD+R

Adrian E 12th December 2013 12:36 PM

As above, single layer media needed - it'll probably work off your mac and worth a try before attempting anything else :)

snapdragon 12th December 2013 06:04 PM

Try single layer, I use a Mac and it worked fine with +R and -R even using Toast or Disk Utility.

PsYcHe 12th December 2013 07:41 PM

I use -R single layer and it's fine.. Though I do need to burn at 4x or less.

mannyo 13th December 2013 08:31 AM

Yay, it works. Used Roxio Toast and burnt at 2x speed onto a single layer Verbatim DVD-R.

At last I have some local roads which were missing.

limoncello 13th December 2013 10:48 AM

do you also have 3d available now or did you have it before

mannyo 13th December 2013 10:55 AM

The MMI firmware currently installed is too old for that. I do have the three ISO's for the latest version, although I have not got around to running them through.

mannyo 14th December 2013 10:47 AM

After trying to navigate 140 miles last night, part way through the route it stopped navigating and came up "check navigation dvd" again.

So I stopped at the next services and tried to get it to recognise the original 2003 one, which generated the same error when put back in. The system immediately recognises my copy and it seems ok, but its obvious the disk copy is not working perfectly. There is also no navigation audio on the 2013 version for some reason, just visual guidance.

I don't know if the reason the original older 2003 one no longer works is because the newer one has been used, and perhaps something has been updated. so I need to attempt to get a perfect copy of the 2013 version that works.

PsYcHe 14th December 2013 11:12 AM

You may need the MMI software updated too, that could potentially be causing issues.

Somerandomguy 14th December 2013 03:22 PM

The later nav discs do update the nav system, so there is no going back. Mine played up a bit when i first got the car, and cleaning it a few times with a CD cleaner disc sorted it.

manca 14th December 2013 04:12 PM

I had a cowboy 2011 disc in mine which stopped working. I went back to the original 2005 disc not expecting it to work but it does and i have retained 3d mapping and traffic. Sbould add I have latest MMI firmware installed.

Coming back to this,

After upgrading the MMI to 5570, I though I'd try my dodgy 2013 disc again. Still no luck, it just says check navigation dvd, however the 2003 one loads first time now. Mine just does not seem to like copies. I have tried DVD-R and DVD+R media, the result is the same.

From what I have read on forums siuch as gpsunderground, I think all it 'updates' are voice commands (audio files get saved to memory), and TMC table - which is a lookup table of TMC location codes to road stretches.

The media type is only one part of the problem, did you make sure you chanked the bookmark to DVD-ROM, not all burners will do this.

sometimes the copies last quite a while other times only a few months

I've now succeeded I think, the one I burnt on my dads PC last week using a Pioneer BD writer on Verbatim DVD-R media was immediately recognised and asked if I wanted to update the software. After about 10 mins of updating, and a reboot the disk is working. TMC is also working, not sure what else has changed apart from the map data.

You should find 3D map option now +++

mannyo 1st February 2014 03:37 PM

I had the 3D map view with the 2003 factory disc following the MMI upgrade.

Thats what fella told me from audi, its about mmi version not maps year.

I've noticed a big difference when switching to 2012 maps from 2006

mannyo 1st February 2014 05:02 PM

I advanced 10 years, from 2003 to 2013. Maybe now I can drive from Blandford to Castle Combe without doing a large amount of off road (according to the nav).

snapdragon 1st February 2014 05:08 PM

It's sad that the 3D option loses the street names.
Is it really that feeble it can't do both?

mannyo 1st February 2014 05:13 PM

in 3D it does show the main road numbers, so M3, M25, M27 etc. I dont think the screen size and resolution lend itself to displaying what would be quiet small text on screen.

M-A8 1st February 2014 06:03 PM

In my example it just doesn't bother me at all, dont need to see the streets but if you do i think you need to just press the center button and it switches to 2d.
It also depends and what zoom you keep your maps while navigating.

Snapdragon, have you got the newer mmi sw or not yet??
I could send you a 'complementary' 2012 maps and then you can see for yourself.

And this evening the car proclaimed "Check Navigation DVD", so its obviously very hit and miss. Will be putting the 2003 disc back in, when it eventually stops raining.

Manny, either clean the laser for the sake of it with a cleaning cd or cotton bud and alcohol and I will try to get 2012 or 13 full European maps send over to you maybe even tomorrow +++

snapdragon 13th February 2014 07:38 AM

Thanks M-A8, yes I have the latest SW and 2013 maps, waiting for 2014 with baited breath. Hoping it will be available by next Monday.

Lyons 13th February 2014 08:36 AM

Ridiculous question, but where is the drive for the navigation disc on an 08 with 2G?

Behind the left-hand boot panel, it says navigation on it and has a slot load optical drive with eject button.

Lyons 13th February 2014 09:01 AM

Dead on, cheers. I haven't got round to looking in behind those yet.

There is sooo much more stuff hidden all over the car you'll be surprised ;)

snapdragon 9th March 2014 09:54 PM

It comes on two DVD+R's this year, one for Eastern Europe and one for Western Europe.
