Intermittent Traction Control Light and ABS Light

Recently, I've been having intermittent Traction Control and ABS lights come on in the dash. There doesn't appear to be any pattern as to when it happens. It occurs at slow and fast speeds. They may stay on for a second or two or upwards of an hour. It doesn't appear to have any adverse effect on the car.

I've done some searching here and one of the threads shows cleaning the ABS sensors, which I may tackle. I've only had a quick look at one of the wheels as I don't have any axle stands (will be borrowing some over Christmas) and found the ABS sensor. What else could be causing this to happen, and where else should I be looking once I have the car on stands?

I bought a cheap VCDS cable off eBay and there aren't any errors showing up regarding brakes or the like. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

ainarssems 22nd December 2013 08:30 PM

What about errors in other controllers. If instrument cluster have no communication with ABS controller it will put the lights on. If signal from MAF or throttle body or throttle position sensor is wrong ECU cannot calculate the load properly and will put the lights on.

steamship 22nd December 2013 09:31 PM

Since I got it serviced and the F125 switch and lambda sensors replaced in October, only one error has popped up (Address 35), and that seems random. I sometimes get another intermittent one in Address 37 and 56, but haven't noticed any difference in behaviour. This is a copy of the scan I did today:

ABS Sensors, or possibly a failing wheel bearing too, putting the reluctor ring out of sync with the sensor.

Thanks. Hoping it is the first, but will find out after I clean them.

ainarssems 23rd December 2013 01:50 PM

When the lights come on connect VCDS, go to ABS controller and in measuring blocks check speed for each of the wheels while driving. If one is different you know where the problem is and do not need to clean all sensors in this terrible weather( it's not that bad if you can do it indoors but saves extra hustle anyway). It helps if you can have somebody else to drive the car while you are checking values

omlilleby 5th January 2014 06:25 PM

Had the same problem on my s8, when i floor it the light come on and sometime not, no error codes on vcds about it. changed the maf sensor and never seen it again. Could not feel it on car that the maf was broken but could read out fron vcds that the values was low.

steamship 5th January 2014 06:51 PM

On the few times I've been out in the car since my original postings, I've seen the lights maybe twice, and that was for literally a few seconds each time. Was just driving along normally. No acceleration or braking. Wasn't in the best of health over the last couple of weeks, so still no axle stands... and it's too wet and miserable out there anyway.

GH77 17th May 2014 04:34 PM

Hi,

Was looking for something else completely when I came across this so thought I would chip in even although the thread is months old :)

I had the same problem. Looked at MAF, ABS etc etc. I ended up cleaning the throttle body thoroughly and readapting it. Haven't seen the lights since. I presume it was the TB not knowing to what degree it was actually open or closed throwing all the other sensors out of sync. Might be worth a try for you too?

strummagnet 15th March 2023 04:45 PM

Just had this occurence with the traction control and abs lights coming on. Driven up from Gosport to Newcastle then on to Hexham yesterday with a snowstorm thrown in for good measure. Prior to the lights coming on had a noticable reduction in power and feeling like a fuel starvation issue. Reading half a tank so pulled in and filled up with 54ltrs fuel. Car behaved perfectly for the next 20 miles back to base.

As mentioned above, the weather has been pretty foul and the car looks as if it has been on a wet weather rally circuit. Thinking dirty ABS sensors but would it cause engine performance issues as well?

Ronin 15th March 2023 08:13 PM

I would scan the car with VCDS first and go from there. I've had both front abs sensors go and they didn't reduce performance or anything like that.

Thinking now that the brakes were grabbing on the wheel that the sensor is reading wrong. Coming from the rear so off to the power wash tomorrow to get rid of the mud and crud and go from there.

Cant scan as my computer isnt with me. :(

Ronin 15th March 2023 09:17 PM

When abs works you feel the brake pedal vibrate and there is a distinct buzz of the abs pump, the brakes will never just randomly grab like when driving with adaptive cruise control etc.

My front abs sensors started to play up when going over bumps and the above is exactly what I would get. The fault was later narrowed down to the piece of ABS sensor which goes from the strut to the body, it simply got worn out after 20+ years.

If it is the sensors for you, i made a guide showing how to make them for around £30 instead of paying £399 for new ones.

steamship 16th March 2023 10:34 AM

A blast from the past. From what I remember at the time, I removed and cleaned all the ABS sensors, which didn't seem that bad, followed the suggestion by ainarssems of monitoring the measuring blocks and they were fine. I also replaced a MAF at some point, but don't remember if it was to do with the same issue.

If the lights came on and went off again, scanning for errors may not show up anything if you switch the engine off, as they clear themselves. Not sure about anyone else, but I've never plugged in the VCDS cable when the ignition was on or engine running, as worried it might cause damage.

Not sure if it's related and don't want to muddy the waters, but since you'll be plugging in VCDS, check out the brake switch measuring blocks in module 01-Engine, address 66. Untouched it should read 0000, a slight push with your finger should read 1010, and a little bit more pressure should read 1011. Only because you mentioned a 'reduction in power', and if the ECU thinks the brake switch has been depressed, it will reduce the power.

Ronin 16th March 2023 11:01 AM

One of the biggest advantages of VCDs is loggin live data while the engine is running and the car is moving.
You can even save it to a text file and plot a graph with excell, I did that when diagnosing my abs sensors.

strummagnet 16th March 2023 04:39 PM

I found a VAG guy in Hexham who scanned the car, no faults present. Car was covered in 'muck n bullets' so kindly power washed it down. Driven over 120 miles today and not a murmur, drove in its normal 'sublime' mode. Took it back for another scan and still nothing logged.

Im travelling back down south tomorrow (via the A8 Parts Store in Stockton) so will see what occurs. Hopefully nothing.

Thanks for all your input.

strummagnet 27th March 2023 04:34 PM

Well, found some time in break from work to scan the car using VCDS light. Now have some codes. One thing of note that there is a lot of intermittent codes popping up so thinking loose connections somewhere?

Something worth trying is checking the connectors (below the bench seat) and apply some dielectric grease. Ensure you disconnect battery first, and afterwards try and clear code from within address 15.

The alarm horn one is pretty common in all the VAG cars as their internal batteries dies and/or corrode. Hood switch might be loose connection or not secured properly. I've had the interior monitoring one before, but I was having issues with the central locking not unlocking the car.

This might be as a result of the error in address 15 above.

MikkiJayne 27th March 2023 10:09 PM

The crash signal implausible is a peculiarity of this car that I couldn't solve. I changed all the ecus which can interact with the crash signal, to no avail, checked the wiring - all fine, sometimes it'll clear and go away for a bit, sometimes it comes back straight away. Its most puzzling. It could be something to do with canbus identities, since this one had so many replacement parts. Its the one code I couldn't get to the bottom of, but doesn't appear to affect anything and doesn't give any warning lights.

The engine codes are likely a bad connection in the ECU box. Pop the lid, and pull each connector in turn and give them a spray of WD40 and then put them back. I'll have a look at the diagrams when I get a chance and see if they all go through the same connector, or have a common supply or ground.

Keep a close eye on the MAF error and load signal implausible in the TCU as that can have an impact on the gearbox, both shift quality and consequently longevity. If it has a common supply or ground with the other bits that are having issues then it could simply not be giving a signal at times, but if its actually failed and giving a duff load signal that needs sorting asap.

I think its not terrible to change the rear seat airbags if that code is persistent after fiddling with the connector. I have plenty of spare seats which can donate one.

Sounds like the low brake pad warning light staying on even after replacing the pads which I had for ages.

I searched that 17931 error code and came across the following post - note the 'Special Notes'. With your understanding of these cars, does it sound like a feasible solution?

http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index...1/P1523/005411

I've also attached a section of the wiring diagram (p.25) from Current Flow Basic equipment From model year 2001.pdf showing the 'crash wire' (A125). E3 is the hazard warning switch.

MikkiJayne 28th March 2023 11:14 AM

Interesting. I don't think I found this but it does sound feasible. Not sure if I changed the hazard switch or not tbh but its worth a try.

strummagnet 28th March 2023 03:24 PM

Thanks for all your input Steamship and MJ. Looks like a job for the weekend owing to lack of time and dicey weather. I think it is within my limited capability.

MJ can I substitute WD40 for contact cleaner?

Is it prudent to get hold of a new hazard flash unit if such an item is available?

Only had one small 'thump' in the gearbox happen last week when the traction control / abs went nuts whilst getting battered with snow up in Newcastle. Since then has been shifting smoothly. Will run another scan after the weekend's fiddling.

All those engine components are run from the same fuse - S117 'control element fuse' which is a yellow 20A in the ECU box. I'd suggest replacing the fuse and giving the fuse holder terminals a spray with contact cleaner / WD40. Its likely there is some corrosion or grot on the terminals from when it was damp in there.

I have a box of hazard switches if you want one posting, or are passing to pick one up +++

Checked in the ECU box and all fuses were in a state of corrosion. The 20A fell apart after tugging it out! Liberal amounts of contact cleaner and all fuses replaced.

I noticed some condensation to the underside of the ECU box lid. You would think there must be some way of ventilating this box to alleviate this?

Crash implausible error has disappeared. +++
All intermittent have gone. +++

On to the Airbag issue.
