its not good, sounds like this usually means the imminent death of the transmission.

Have a read of this article.

yes mate, I am on that just now. just ordered filter and gasket and going to pull the auto box sump.
any tips will be a big help

nickid 4th February 2014 01:09 PM

oil 90k on clock so I hope its just needing a change of filter and oil:-(

nickid 7th February 2014 07:18 PM

Just waiting on the filter gasket and oil arriving, so fingers crossed it fixes the problem.
If the gear box is knackered what are my options ? new box? refurb box? have it rebuilt?
Also, is there a better box from another model that can be fitted

nickid 9th February 2014 02:01 PM

just pulled the oil out and it looks like it was changed not to long ago.
the pans magnets have no bits stuck to them
all I can do now is replace the filter and new seal and fill it again and see if the noise has gone.

all help welcome please

update.
now refill and filter change. have ran car as per instructions and sitting under the car, the screeching sound when revved sounds to be coming from water drain holes near the clutch area.
the sound is very light when its sitting, but when revved the sound is worse when you take your foot off the peddle.
can I have all help with this. pleeeeeese

Screeching noise? A tad Tardis-like in my opinion.

My previous A8 (1999 FL) used to make a very similar noise when pulling away from cold and seemed to disappear after the box/fluid had warmed up. I'm sure it was a sign of impending doom as the gearbox in that car suffered from transmission thump when changing down gears when pulling up to a set of traffic lights.

I never found out the reason behind the noise as I let the car go when I left the UK to live in Uruguay for 18 months. My current A8L is parked up awaiting a new or reconditioned gearbox. It failed on me 10 days ago near Gatwick but managed to get the old girl back home in limp-home mode i.e. 5th gear only. I inadvertently stuck my post under the Engine section which was my mistake.

Current costs are £1700 for a repair/replace broken bits going up to £2700 for a full recon and then the executive option of £4500 from Audi. The £2700 quote was from the ZF agent in Croydon (Pitlake). Current car has 128K on the clock, and my previous car was slightly higher at 139K.

I am hoping it is the clutch bearing because all gears are very smooth and working fine????????

nickid 14th February 2014 07:41 PM

been told it Looks like broken PCV - too much air is sucked from crankcase and you hear rear main seal. Open oil cup - if engine dies or sound disappears - it's it! ld

nickid 16th February 2014 06:05 PM

all sorted. pcv valve had broke and was staying open+++

mannyo 16th February 2014 09:15 PM

At least it was not the transmission after all.

nickid 17th February 2014 04:55 PM

I know. I am so relieved:ROFL:

Goran 18th February 2014 09:27 AM

well done, glad it was a easy fix.

nickid 18th February 2014 09:57 AM

Well at least it got a filter and oil change

The_Laird 18th February 2014 11:39 AM

Great news! +++

nickid 19th February 2014 12:08 PM

now to my electric fan:ROFL:

nickid 19th February 2014 07:41 PM

Good news short lived. Have a squeak again. I part I rev the engine and when I lift off the gas it squeaks like a loose belt or pully bearing.

nickid 20th February 2014 11:13 AM

it seems to be the diy pcv vale ive made. if I take off the one way valve and stop it from sucking the crankcase the sound down near my gear box goes away?????

mannyo 20th February 2014 12:16 PM

Guess it needs a proper replacement and not the DIY approach,

nickid 20th February 2014 12:30 PM

I followed the diy on here so why it doesn't work for me I don't know?. need to find a new replacement part
