Fingerprint Start button retrofit

I can get a whole unit for something like 30 quid so thinking of retrofitting it.

Does anyone know what is EXACTLY ;) required to do the job??

Very much appreciated as always

Thank you

Would I need new or separate control unit, or additional memory?? so car can save the fingerprint somewhere???

The fingerprint device is ...... awful. Ask some others here about their experiences with it.

Mine is a pain, finger has to be in the right place or no identification,

But the worst it does is not change the radio for me, as the seats and mirrors are done when i unlock

The fingerprint scan sucks.. honestly.. major suckage. My PF had it, and as I was driving 99% of the time, the failed scans were fine as it's only for memory, but... that error message on at least 1 in 3 starts was annoying, and then for half of the other journeys, wouldn't recognise SWMBO's finger.

Darren has had a pile of issues with his. I'd stick with the normal system and buttons in the door.

I've worked on various IT security systems, so was amused when Audi loaned me (for many months) a D3 4.0TDi a while back that was almost "fully loaded" including fingerprint recognition.

I decided to play with it, but lost interest pretty quickly as it just wasn't reliable enough. Made sure it was all cleared out and turned off before I gave it back.

Unless it's improve radically I really wouldn't bother. :tuttut:

The fingerprint reader in my D3 is about the only thing I've never had a problem with (now tempting fate).

When the car has been driven using the key in the ignition by another driver, and all setting altered, I just jump in press the button and go. A/C settings change, Radio changes, my contact list pops up, seats/mirrors and steering wheel adjusts itself.

Jeez, Apple can't even get it right 10 years later! I turned the 'feature' off on my iPhone 5S a couple of days after buying it.....

PsYcHe 6th February 2014 08:10 AM

The iPhone (much like many laptop options) needs a swipe, where the A8 one is a full finger pad read, but is really easily affected by angle, and pressure used.

My wife always gets in and starts the car in the morning and does the preflight checks such as heated seats and windows and entering destination.
I would hate the seats and everything to move to her position. The memory positions are stored with the Key ID at the moment would this be totally redundant if Fingerprint ID is fitted?

PsYcHe 6th February 2014 02:08 PM

It would, yes... Assuming the thing works every time.. Car will always start if it can find the key as the fingerprint is user ID only, not security.

...so where all this info would be stored if key is redundant after fitting fingerprint switch???

audifin 6th February 2014 02:52 PM

The key ID is not redundant with fingerprint sensor... the seat position etc. will be still adjusted based on the key ID. For the same reason I find the fingerprint sensor a bit pointless though ;)

...so if you have a fingerprint start button, can you start the car with the key without scanning your finger??
Cheers

Absolutely..

M-A8 6th February 2014 03:28 PM

So whats the point to have it if data is kept on the key and fingerprint isn't required to start the car??
So stupid...

Well exactly... I wouldn't bother with the retrofit. The fingerprint ID does "override" the key ID with memory setting etc. so if you have more than 2 regular drivers it could be useful. In my case there are only 2 drivers, my other half has her key and I have mine.

This is why my Mrs has her own car ;)

I would rather be abused by Gorillas somewhere in the Vietnam jungle then give my 8 to Mrs...

Thanks for all the info guys +++
