Altinator whine ?....
Has anyone experienced a supercharger like noise from there 8 ?
I think the altinator is on its way out im going to take the belt off and run the engine without and see if the noise goes away I paniced and thought it might be the box ! But it dose it in neutral park and drive in time with engine revs. Any ideas any one ? |
No ideas ?

We once had a C220 Kompressor but it didn't whine so I don't know how that sounds but my A8 3.0TDi engine does whine slightly compared to other engines and has done since I bought it so would be interested how your test goes.

Does the belt not also drive the aircon and power steering?
Have you checked to see if turning thr aircon off makes a difference? |
Mine also make this noise but only after i have put my foot down. Let me know if you find out what it is ?

That's just the wails of the dead dinosaurs you're burning screaming through the years :)

Could be the aircon compressor, try shutting the whole system off or try selecting econ mode to disable the compressor.
|
Tried all of the above it definitely dose it in every selection D P R N S all of them and ive also figured its definitely not the gear box because if I nock it in two neutral on the move its still only in time with the engine revs not road speed :s
Confused now ... Can only be eather Air con pump Power steering pump Altinator Or auxiliary belt tentioner Well...I guess any way |
Mine is the same Daviebike. But not aircon as still does it with that declutched, and could be the vacuum pump for the brakes (and maybe EGR), or hydraulic pump in the auto box as that runs in N too.
|
Mine does it but goes off when I shut the a/c off. Must be a/c pump in my case. I've got used to it, did **** me off for a while though.. I'm sure it'll **** me off again at some point when the a/c packs-up

i finnally took off my aux belt yesterday ... started up the car and she purrs like a kitten ...
it seems the bearings in the alternator are shot so hopefully il be able to get new bearings for it or replacement if not |
After all that effort re building the altinator with new bearings ect turned out it was one of the pullys ...
So rather than paying a fortune for all new ones I stripped it all down and pressed new bearings into them all And bobs your uncle all smooth and quiet.. On the plus side altinator is good for another 8 years +++ |
Good result, and probably a good thing you caught it before it destroyed itself and took out the belt.
