2014 Charity Mooch-Fest

Guys (and Ladies),

Once more, I'm after your money.. Though not for me, it's once more for Prostate Cancer UK. Myself and my fellow Hairy Test Cycles are off around Tummel Valley on the Étape Caledonia (81 miles of scenic countryside), and also the Étape Loch Ness (67 miles of scenic countryside). As with last year, we're supporting Prostate Cancer UK.

Couple of wee reminders as to why it's a worthy cause:

Across the UK
  • Prostate Cancer is the most common cancer in men.
  • Every hour one man dies from prostate cancer - that's more than 10,000 every year.
  • Over 40,000* men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year - that's more than 100* men diagnosed every day.
  • It's estimated that by 2030, prostate cancer will be the most common cancer.
  • One in eight men will get prostate cancer.
  • Over a quarter of a million* men are living with and after prostate cancer.
  • Two out of three adults don't know what the prostate gland does.

So if you could pop along to http://justgiving.com/THTC2014 and bung us a few quid, that would be magic, thanks.

Nice name...

Done - see you in June.

Architex_mA8tey 18th April 2014 08:34 PM

Same here, please everyone give what you can for a fantastic cause. I've stuck the thread to keep it at the top. Good luck with the challenge to you all Richard +++

HPsauce 18th April 2014 08:38 PM

Hope you do well, though I won't be sponsoring you specifically as I already support PCUK as it's what got my dad.

Done. £1.00 for every mile you plan on cycling. Pity I didn't live in Scotland, as I could join you. My very best friend was diagnosed with Prostrate cancer a few years ago. Unfortunately for him (and his family), it's been very aggressive.

A very worthy cause indeed, so please people, donate.

BTW If donating, remember the Gift Aid part. I'm not in a position to use the Gift Aid.

Thanks steamship... incredibly generous of you, much appreciated.

Cheers for the sticky Neil..

Just in case folks are using the 'new posts' button (like I do).. A little shameless bumpage :)

How was Loch Ness Richard?

PsYcHe 5th May 2014 04:44 PM

The Etape Loch Ness event was fantastic, a few spots of rain and a little bit of a stiff breeze heading south, but stunning views all round. Apart from the Glendoe hill climb, the whole route is thoroughly recommended (even in a car), 5 miles from bottom to top of Glendoe, with good chunks of 10%+, quite pleased with my overall time of 3:49 plus just shy of 10 minutes of stops and a hillclimb time of 33 minutes.

If anyone is interested in such things, the Strava log is below:

Few days of rest with a recovery ride tomorrow before next weekend's 81-miler.

47p2 5th May 2014 04:55 PM

Nice one Richard, well done

47p2 10th May 2014 08:06 PM

Looks like it could be a wet ride tomorrow Richard, hope you have a great day and don't get soaked

PsYcHe 11th May 2014 05:39 PM

Well, the weather gods were on our side and with only a few spots of rain about half way round, it was pretty decent going.

Managed to bumble my way around the 81 mile course in 4 hours 29 minutes which puts me 1598th out of a little over 5000, so can't complain and well up the charts in the sprint and King of the Mountain sections.

a massive thanks to all of you who have donated, your support is hugely appreciated.

Architex_mA8tey 11th May 2014 06:13 PM

Well done Richard, great effort +++

M-A8 11th May 2014 08:14 PM

Well done Rich
Sounds like a killer course, 81miles !!! Around 80 to many for me ;)

47p2 11th May 2014 09:33 PM

Read a few reports on the course, full of Sunday warriors who hadn't a clue about cycling and caused a number of crashes, hope nobody was seriously hurt.
5000 is way too many for the roads, it would be a better day out with half that amount but then the organisers would need to double the entry fees to break even.

Kind of sticks in my throat that none of the entry fees actually go to any charity, and for that reason plus 5000 on the road I doubt it's a sportive I will ever participate in.

Well done on completing it Richard, and a reasonable time, you must have been tucked in with a good group but even that takes a bit of work hanging onto them when they start putting the pressure on

PsYcHe 12th May 2014 09:08 AM

Plenty of idiots out there, but getting off in an earlier bunch keeps you away from most of them. Tailed a couple of groups, but they tended to either be going too fast or too slow, so probably 60+ miles we spent on our own.

Start line was pretty chaotic, folks with 4000+ race numbers jamming up the entry to the gate so you couldn't get out in your proper wave, but apart from that, it was good fun.. Bloody knackered though!

gninnam 12th May 2014 11:16 AM

Well done Richard +++

Well done mate.

Well done Richard, and the organisers of the 2104 Annual meet have decided that the distribution of prizes at this years meet will be slightly different than last years (see thread) and are intending that we will hold a raffle (whilst still having quiz and "best car" prizes). The proceeds of the raffle will go towards your prostate cancer charity. +++

Richard,
Just to add my congratulations!

All the best,
Steve
