Umbrella Holder Retrofit

6 Attachment(s)
Hi folks here is a quick how to on fitting the brolly holder to the toolbox in the boot.

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1400010696

So you will need

3 x Screws (N 91090701)
1 x Umbrella holder (4E0860264) list price is 14.68 inc vat

The unit is fitted by cutting the toolbox like in the following pictures and then drilling three holes for the screws to hold the part on.

In order to find where the holes need to be cut I put tape on the cover so I could mark where to drill one the big hole has been cut.

Start by cutting a small hole in the middle with a stanley knife approximately where the protruding part sits, once you have a hole big enough for you finger to get in you will feel a recess that the grip will sit into, continue trimming the hole out till you are at the edges of the recess and then you can place the grip in the hole and centre it.

Then trace round the grip with a pen so you have an outline, you can then transfer the measurements for the mounting holes or carefully peel of the masking tape and poke through the tape into the holes as i did then stick back onto the box for drilling of holes.

Once your holes are drilled, just have to refit and stand back and admire your handy work.

Nice, i think I'll add that to my list of upgrades too+++

HPsauce 13th May 2014 08:58 PM

Any reason why you couldn't fit that to a D2?
Obviously, not in the exact same place as there's a warning triangle there, but above the inside handle looks OK.

yes I do remember a certain wedding David!!

But guess its ok if you happen to be a Laird, you have minions to appear with umbrellas when required!!

Delboy 13th May 2014 09:50 PM

What does the inside of the d2 toolkit look like?

M-A8 14th May 2014 06:22 AM

Well done Del, good job +++ :pint:

It sits in the spare wheel well, the big empty space houses the removable towbar if you have one fitted.

Nice guide, thanks.

At the moment I've got an umbrella shoved through the two fabric loops that are attached to the two big plastic hooks that spring down from the top of the boot.

snapdragon 14th May 2014 09:18 AM

If anyone wants a 'tastefully' branded one, there are Audi umbrellas on aliexpress, it is an auto brolly in charcoal and has grey reflective Audi symbols (that's why they appear white in some photos due to flash). I bought a couple and put one in each rear door pocket.

ScottD3 14th May 2014 09:25 AM

I like that.
If mine fails at any point I'll be opting for that one.

Nice like snapdragon.
I need a golfing umbrella but can't decide on what to go for.

Neat idea, but I suspect your D3 LWB pockets are bigger than most. ;)

As for the D2 rear door pockets, they are really too small for a brolly. :( And the rear lights get in the way of fitting a big one on the boot lid rear face.
I'm going to investigate what clips/loops can hold one across the warning triangle in the lid.

HPSauce, Something like this work for you guys?

I like that, did wonder before when I seen a photo of your boot what it was :)

ScottD3 14th May 2014 10:37 AM

Just after a nice golf umbrella for it now.

The bar at the bottom can be used to hang cloths off it.
Be good when cleaning/polishing the car.

Can you get Audi Pegs?

HPsauce 14th May 2014 10:41 AM

Excellent idea, I knew I'd seen a picture of something like that somewhere before, didn't realise it was your boot (or where to get one). +++
And a couple of hooks over the bar for takeaways. :D

ScottD3 14th May 2014 10:50 AM

I got the two fold down handles.
I'll leave the bar for towels.

HPsauce 14th May 2014 10:55 AM

Having just had a rummage on eBay there are a couple of alternative designs, all come from South Korea!
The alternatives, which fix to the boot lid lining material, might be better for me. ;)

ScottD3 14th May 2014 10:56 AM

nowt wrong with SK.
Takes a bit of time to turn up but worth it.

HPsauce 14th May 2014 11:11 AM

I was thinking of the need for brollies, i.e. weather. I do recall the F1 Grand Prix there often being "damp".

M-A8 14th May 2014 06:42 PM

I like the bar, I think it's a great idea+++ and I like the little umbrellas, nice and compact.
I've never used alliexpress, looks very much like ebay.

Nope, arrived as fast as a UK second-class letter!
Only decision was which way up to mount the clips. They are pretty secure so I decided that opening down was easier for putting the umbrella in and taking it out.

ScottD3 2nd June 2014 09:21 AM

Its shocking when post from another country is as quick as our own.

That looks good.

I'm still after an umbrella. lol

Did I miss the link to this one? I quite fancy that version too. Is it this one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Multi-Purp...item3f2de05c8f ?

Only got back from Tyndrum just now (via the long route including 6 ferries and many distilleries!) so being brief until I clear the backlog!

I'm assuming you got your distillery passport nicely stamped up then! :D

Oddly no, only one extra stamp after Oban, at Lagavulin. Was given a fair number of tasting glasses though (all free).
The only other distillery in the passport that we saw (but didn't go in) was Caol Ila, all the others we visited (plenty!) are nothing to do with Diageo and their "Classic Malts" marketing.
I now have photos of every distillery on Islay as well as those on Jura and Arran. Talisker (on Skye) we toured a couple of years ago.

On my best day I tried 10 different malts, all good ones, starting alongside my smoked mackerel at breakfast! :D

Architex_mA8tey 17th June 2014 10:22 PM

Lol good work that man! :D

Was Mrs Sauce driving seeing you had been, so to speak, on the sauce since breakfast :tuttut:

tc4332 9th February 2015 11:53 AM

Ordered the OEM part and received it and the screws some months back.
Today I finally fitted it. Looks good with the Audi blagged umbrela.
Now what to do next from the list of "nice to haves". :D
Just landed another job, means I'll be in Oxford all day tomorrow with a 16 seater minibus.:(

Crazy_Guitar 30th July 2015 12:27 AM

I wonder if that fits the Q7 4L... ;)

tc4332 30th July 2015 07:43 AM

Sorry, cannot help you with that.

Turbo Tony 18th May 2016 08:35 PM

Del & Ray: how did you know where to start cutting for the recess?

I've just bought one and I'm worried I'll chop up my toolkit in the wrong place!

tc4332 18th May 2016 09:02 PM

I followed Del's destruction guide. Panicked a bit then just got on with it.
Sticking the Stanley knife in at first was scary, but it worked out OK.

Turbo Tony 19th May 2016 07:26 PM

Gulp!

Delboy 20th May 2016 07:01 AM

Yeah you just have to man up Tony, if you work out roughly where it needs to be and start in the middle and work your way out to the extremity you will soon see the structure from the other side that will dictate where to cut to.

Ha ha! I've been telling myself that since I bought the car! I've been reluctant to open stuff up and do my usual fiddling. I must somehow convince myself, it's a car - just like the others I've owned/worked on over the years.

Turbo Tony 22nd May 2016 10:05 PM

So, I managed to fit mine last night. It was actually quite a pleasurable little crafts project (yes, I'm that sad). I took the opportunity to clean the toolkit a little seeing as it was outside the car too.

Thanks so much for all your help, I couldn't have done it without you both. +++

Good stuff, glad we could be of assistance and encouragement

tc4332 23rd May 2016 08:55 AM

+1 to what Del said.

I also found it quite satisfying.

And I still smile when I close the boot remotely. Talk about sad, I've even been known to stand indoors waiting for someone to walk past and as they do I remotely open and close the boot. The expressions are marvelous.
