Close Trunk Lid With Remotes Or Door Button On A8

You guys seen this?

http://www.dognmonkey.com/audi/close...utton-a8l.html

Anyone done it?

I got loads of spare relays at home. I'm tempted.

PsYcHe 27th May 2014 03:34 PM

Looks almost too easy...

ScottD3 27th May 2014 04:43 PM

Yeah. 2 cables and a relay.

I'm not 100% sure on what's on about with the pin outs of the cables to the relays though.

jza8 27th May 2014 08:48 PM

It really is simple
http://www.reuk.co.uk/OtherImages/4-...tive-relay.jpg
1. When pins 85 and 86 get 12v they close pins 30 and 87 (4pin relay)
2. When you press the remote button the green wire on the latch goes to 12v to open the latch.
3. Connect the green wire (12v) to 86 and brown (ground) to 85. Now pressing the remote button will activate the relay and close pins 30 and 87.
4. Now relay pins 30 and 87 should be connected to pins 2 and 3 (center 2 pins) of the close switch, as relay will short them when activated - same as the button does.

Have to do this myself when i find some time. +++

ScottD3 28th May 2014 06:33 AM

His description of the relay pins out and where the wires should go confused me but I understand what you put and it saves me from testing the cables and working it out myself. +++

I'm off to find some relays.

onetwentie 28th May 2014 08:00 PM

I recently was working with a similar 4 pin relay with my A8 (2007 D3). Specifically the relay that controls the air suspension compressor. So i've learnt how they work (or reminded myself of that which I had forgotten from school days).

This looks really interesting and cool! :D

Someone please shout up if they manage it? I have my boot liner removed as waiting for a replacement boot lid tail light (the old one managed to get a crack in it somehow!), so I'm tempted too! +++

Seen this and thought its a nice little mod, but I think I will order plugs from Audi so it can just be plugged in and not splicing the harness.

Its not that I cant its i just don't like doing it if there is another way.

jza8 28th May 2014 08:55 PM

I would take the pins out of the plug and solder the wires to the pin directly. Not a fan of the splice connectors either.

Del, what do you mean when you say order plugs from Audi? am I missing something?

Delboy 28th May 2014 09:49 PM

well instead of using scotch locks :tuttut: hideous things.

I was thinking of buying the plugs to match the two locations so a small middle man harness could be made to allow the relay to be plugged in with out modifying any of the car wiring harness.

If you must splice wires in to a car harness they really ought to be soldered in to prevent problems in the future.

Connectors are quite cheap like a few quid each so I am doing some digging through the wiring diagrams at the mo to get a list of part numbers.

onetwentie 28th May 2014 10:06 PM

Ah okay, I think I follow now. In which case, kindly do post your findings as I would most definitely be interested in a clean way to do this!

Architex_mA8tey 28th May 2014 10:51 PM

I was thinking even neater might be to find some kind of relay seat that the relays fit into and wiring those in permanently so that you can change the relay if you ever needed to?

Totally doable, wouldn't be surprised if there was an empty relay slot somewhere near the central convenience unit that could be appropriated

onetwentie 29th May 2014 01:52 AM

Where is this central convenience unit you speak of Del?

I recall from working with the compressor relay that there were at least two free/empty relay 'seats' there, however that's at the front passenger footwell hence probably not the most useful location for this. However I agree,it would be a very neat job if done that way.

In fact I think I have a spare relay which I bought from the stealers As a backup for when I was dealing with the compressor!

New project scope agreed!:D

ScottD3 29th May 2014 06:52 AM

Delboy, Share your findings mate.

Was toying with the idea of doing a plug in play loom. I'm with you. Solder it or use plugs, sod all that scotchlok crap.
Its not a 1990 Nova.

The free relay slots is a good idea but that makes the mod a bit more permanent and requires more work than a plug in play loom?

Delboy 29th May 2014 09:12 AM

Indeed Scott if it were a relay slot from the car then it would be a bit permanent, it could easily made up with plugs like I said earlier but with a relay carrier so if the relay failed it could be easily swapped.

Spent some time last night looking at etka and elsa and think for the sake of speed and convenience the mid will be best placed I'm the battery compartment as that's where the central convenience unit is.

Putting it there means larger plugs with more wires but like I said they are cheap.

I'll keep you posted

ScottD3 29th May 2014 09:29 AM

Is there any relay holders near the battery?

The boot lid seems easier. More space to work and easier access to the plug.
Unless I'm missing something?

Delboy 29th May 2014 10:09 AM

Having worked in both areas I will go with battery compartment as there's no trim to remove.

If the mods plug and play the then it's a walk in the park

ScottD3 29th May 2014 10:22 AM

Due to recent work, I've had enough of that side of the car.

But you're right.

ScottD3 8th July 2014 09:16 AM

I had ago at this yesterday and failed.

I was kind of rushing to do it between rain showers.

I've decided to do it via the switch. Mainly because I got the needed plugs and cable to do it.

I followed what jza said and connect the Green wire to 86, ground to 85.
This caused the boot to closed.
I used 2 and 3 from the switch plug.

Reading on he said pins 2 and 3 from the switch should go to 30 and 87.
So I put pins 1 and 4 to 86 and 85 and nothing happened.

I was wet and gave up.

I'll have another look later.
