Dashcam

Has anyone got a dashcam installed in their D3?

If so, which one have you got and how is it wired in?

ScottD3 22nd July 2014 10:54 AM

I have a blackvue DR380g.
Wired it in to the head lining unit at the front.

ScottD3 22nd July 2014 10:55 AM

Its all installed and working fine.

I used this little port off the heads up controls.

Used the proper Audi Plug and cables, then connected them to a random mobile phone charging cable I had which fitted the Camera.

Put it all back together and it ended up like this.

All in and working.

That looks brilliant! Absolutely ideal.

Was it handy enough done? So there only 2 wires needed? Do you know the part numbers of the Audi bits?

Then just lopped off the charger cigarette lighter plug and connected to the 2 Audi wires?

ScottD3 22nd July 2014 11:07 AM

You can see on the pic which pins you needs.
Its 4 and 2. going right to left looking at the pic.

I used this plug.
8k0973754

And this cable
000979009E

I was lucky with the Blackvue camera that it takes a 12v feed.
Some cameras might be a 5v feed. so you can't cut the plug off and wire it in.
Make sure what voltage it needs first.

Lyons 22nd July 2014 11:12 AM

Cheers. So the left wire in photo 2 is pin 2 and the right wire is pin 4? What are they both?

I'm after a cheaper camera as I intend to get 1 for the wifes Tiguan too, but the installation is perfect. Something else for the to do list!

ScottD3 22nd July 2014 11:20 AM

Left is pin 4, that's earth.
right is pin 2, that's live.

Come say hello.
http://dashcamowners.com/

some nice cheap cams around.

Lyons 22nd July 2014 11:25 AM

Last question, does the part number for cable come as a single or a pair of wires?

ScottD3 22nd July 2014 11:42 AM

Its a double ended cable.

So you only need the one.

I got a camera a year ago. It was £17 and pretty rubbish and was a fake of a decent model.
Just changed it for a G1W a couple of weeks ago and thrilled to bits with it.

Whichever one you get, watch out for inferior fakes/clones.
I painted the silver lens-ring and light with matt black paint but the current version is all black anyway.

That looks 100%. Any photos of yours fitted?

The_Laird 8th August 2014 09:53 AM

Where did you get it to make sure it wasn't a fake?

Leave on or not

Im in the process of fitting a dashcam too, question is do you leave it connected to power all the time.

Reason I ask is mine has the option of doing parking mode so if something is seen in the camera field of view it will record any incidents in my absence.

Will the camera be ok to be left on, and will the car shut off the power supply should the battery get low?

Mine (a Transcend DrivePro 220) has parking mode too, but it uses an internal battery. I have it powered from an ignition switched supply and it automatically switches to parking mode when I key-off.

Delboy 30th July 2015 08:46 PM

Don't think mine has an internal battery, as soon as I pull power it informs me its shutting down...

Burnzybubbles 30th July 2015 10:09 PM

Mine I had coming from an un-switched supply at the roof electronics, I would leave it plugged in if I was somewhere I wanted it left on, and if I was removing it from the car or the car was safe I'd just pop the plug out the top, I left it plugged in for over 7 days solid and due to the **** battery management system I nearly ended up with a flat battery once, I recharged the battery and unplugged it during most nights when the car was safe and never had the problem again.

Delboy 30th July 2015 10:21 PM

Food for thought, think I will buy a separate battery saver to wire in line and have it connected to terminal 30 via a fuse.

Johnmed 1st August 2015 07:08 AM

I wired mine into the fusebox, to a switched live. I'd rather not have the camera powered at all when the ignition is off. Better safe than sorry. I prefer to keep things simple given the number drains on the A8s battery.

Delboy 15th August 2015 05:11 PM

4 Attachment(s)
I went the route of fitting an extra fuse into the drivers side panel and wired in a automatic cut of thats settable giving the option of having the camera on for parking mode but it will switch off when the battery is getting low to save a flat battery.

The reason I went that route is it became apparent that the battery manager would not have any influence on the situation should the dash cam be powered from a cigar lighter or the always on supply rail.

Thank you all for this post !
Have successfully fitted a Transcend Drivepro 200 (gift) to a switched live in the roof lighting console with a 12v-5v stepdown

Works a treat, now i can forget about it +++
;O)

tintin 8th December 2015 07:01 AM

So does this mean that the Transcend DrivePro can work off any of the following?

1 - battery inbuilt to the unit (or is that just for time/date memory etc?)
2 - 12v/cigarette lighter socket
3 - direct connection to the car battery

Yes to all of them.

I don't think it lasts a long time on the internal battery, especially if it's being triggered by motion frequently ... a few hours maybe. It's enough to find out who scraped your car while parked at the shops for a few hours (assuming it has had a good charge), but not long enough to be of any real use if your car is parked up on the street for a long time.

If I remember correctly, it comes with a fag lighter adaptor that has a long lead and a mini USB plug on the other end. I didn't use that. Instead I used a USB lead and a 5v regulator/adaptor like this, which I wired into an ignition-switched feed. Doing it this way makes it fully automatic in use. As soon as you jump in the car and drive off it begins recording and when you turn off the ignition it enters parking mode (assuming you've enabled parking mode in the settings).

The 220 has some other seemingly useful features too like Lane Departure and Forward Collision Warning, which work great, but the incessant bleeping every time you switch lanes will drive you nuts; fortunately the bleeping can be turned off.

tintin 8th December 2015 08:29 AM

Cheers Mark - so would you say that the 220 is worth the extra £50 (@c. £130) over the cost of the 200, given that it seems to be mainly the lane departure and collision warning features which are added (aside from the different cosmetic exterior design) ?

I wouldn't pay the extra £50 for those features, no, but I don't think the 200 has a built-in battery or GPS and I think they're definitely worth the extra 50 quid. Having GPS coordinates on the recordings (along with the time date) helps to make any evidence irrefutable, should you ever need it. Additionally, I think the 200 takes a maximum memory card size of 32GB (compared to the 220's 64GB limit).

tintin 8th December 2015 09:15 AM

Agreed, thanks.

tipptop 8th December 2015 03:15 PM

I got this and wired it to an ignition controlled fuse in the left of the dash.

My cam is this one,

http://www.amazon.co.uk/E-PRANCE-Nov...ds=eprance+g1w

It just plugs into that socket above and all nicely hidden behind the glovebox. Have some spare usb sockets aswell for future fiddling.

Hi There,

Just picked up a Mio MiVue C330 - It's a small 1080p camera which has GPS and traffic cameras which is nice. Been playing with it using the cigarette lighter sockets in the car and i'm really not sure what happens with them in terms of power. They don't seem to be always on, but they're on for a while ???

I'm probably going to look in the roof for a switched live as I don't want 24hr display and i'm not overly bothered about parking etc

Have you seen Audi has their own front/rear dashcam available as an accessory now.

My parts guy says his boss tested it and it's good, but probably not up there with the best of the third party ones.

It has some fancy-schmancy name that I can't remember at the moment. It was Audi something Recorder, I think.

1781cc 24th February 2018 04:32 AM

When I sold my S8 the Transcend 220 went with it, but I wanted one for the cabby and after a lot of research I settled on a Garmin 45. super small, good specs and speed camera detection as well - 3 weeks in and its been rock solid on detecting the known points locally so thats all good.

With regards to wiring any dash cam in hard style, I would recommend an "add-a-fuse" kit into the fusebox on the drivers side and then a switched cable hardwire kit (I bought mine on flabby for £10 with the add a fuse all in)

Runs straight up the A-pillar and across the top - no visible cables. Automatically turns the cam off and on with the ignition and starts recording straight away. Couldn't be easier, no fiddling about with roof electrics and transferable if you sell the car.
