I know, I know sometimes you're dreaming about Audi R8. Only sometimes though.

Well, now you can have genuine Audi R8 oil cap on D2 -- the best car Audi have manufactured. Ever.

Part number 420 103 485 B can be ordered from Audi or purchased here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/161361956878 for £25

The part will need a very subtle modification so that the cap sits the right way around. Modification is very easy to do. The eBay seller can send you modified version if you only ask for it. They do it free of charge.

New cap is also better functionally, as is sits a bit tighter. Perhaps only because it is new.

I like….even though it's not D2 OEM….ordered.

David's8 8th September 2014 07:09 PM

Sergey, you are officially certifiable! +++

ummm .... i think I might want one too.

PS. Have you been licking your engine bay clean again!

notorious 8th September 2014 07:12 PM

Actually, didn't open my engine bay since I came from Scotland meet and changed oil immediately after it. Then was buried in some house projects, so car felt a bit lonely...

The_Laird 9th September 2014 09:14 AM

Gotta have one of them. Yes, I know I'm certifiable too! :D

Edit: ordered!

notorious 9th September 2014 05:46 PM

Jim, +++

Make sure to message the eBay seller that you want the modified version.
Otherwise the cap handle with the oiler pictogram will sit ~30 digress off the horizontal position.

Yes, I did that. Thanks. But I'll have to lick the engine bay clean before I fit it! :D

You'll notice the differemce when your kids leave home! There'll be more of both. :D

briang9 10th September 2014 08:05 AM

Only problem is by the time that happens I will be so old all I will be able to do is sit in a corner dribbling into my special blanket, and if still able to drive probably have a Honda:(

The_Laird 10th September 2014 08:14 AM

Not neccessarily, Brian. After all, David and I both have an S8 (and a special blanket!), even if I do drive like Captain Slow a lot of the time!

Unfortunately, they don't always get it right :(

tintin 13th September 2014 07:22 AM

Bummer….but I'm sure you'll be letting them know ;). Postman Pat is waiting for me collect mine when I get back from Glasgow…hopefully it's right.

notorious 13th September 2014 07:43 AM

The right one should have handle aligned exactly with metal lungs at the bottom of the cap. Like on your old cap.

Modification is very easy. Just open the handle in two parts with a plastic wedge, like an old credit card or trim removal tool.

The_Laird 14th September 2014 06:26 AM

But don't I then have to cut slots in it?

notorious 14th September 2014 07:07 AM

Yes, there are 4 slots to cut.
Opening is the most difficult part.
Don't use metal tool to pry off the cap.
Only use plastic, so there will be no scratches.

After opening:

With a pencil mark the bottom of the cap with 4 spots where the slots should be.
Then transfer those 4 marks to the top of the cap.
Then cut slots in the top of the cap with a thin file or with a Dremel tool.

Well done guys, really cool mod

ScottD3 15th September 2014 06:59 AM

They are nice the R8 caps.

I prefer the Porsche caps, no modding needed and a bit more subtle. :)

The_Laird 15th September 2014 08:32 AM

Do you have a photo?

notorious 15th September 2014 08:42 AM

just google

I got the Porsche oil cap going spare cause it wont fit the TDI.
The coolant cap fits 99% of all VAGs.

The_Laird 15th September 2014 09:16 AM

Would they both fit the D2?

ScottD3 15th September 2014 09:19 AM

cant see why not.

want mine to test it?

The_Laird 15th September 2014 10:41 AM

Yes please!

ScottD3 15th September 2014 10:45 AM

PM me your name and address and I'll send it out.

The_Laird 15th September 2014 10:49 AM

Porsche cap fits fine - which do you prefer?

Oli18 21st September 2014 07:34 AM

The Porsche one +++

notorious 21st September 2014 08:48 AM

Porsche cap sits as deep as original cap I assume. I love both.
R8 is a bit in your face, Porsche is more subtle.
Will order that one too and will use depending on mood.

P.S. My wife's got a whole crate of earrings.
I'll have as many oil caps for my A8 +++

Agreed, and me too probably…

PPS - I misread your P.S (I just got up…) and thought it read:-

"P.S. My wife's got a whole crate of earrings. I'll have many as oil caps for my A8" - Slightly different meaning...:o
