I'll pop along, its not too far from me. Aiming to make it around 1pm.
HP, does pulling or pushing the headrest at the same time as operating the motor not work? perhaps the motor is dead? |
The motor makes a lot of high-speed whirring noise and pulling/pushing does nothing. ;)
Pretty sure the mechanism is disconnected. |

sorry for sidetracking thread.
That's interesting, so the motor whirrs but nothing moves and it sounds like it is spinning free not under load? It just so happens I have a recaro backrest apart. The system consists of a very sturdy worm drive secured to the backrest, and a narrow shelf running up and down the worm drive on which the headrest chrome posts rest. The worm drive is coupled to the motor via a flex coupling which couples to the motor via a mini square drive type connector. I cant imagine the worm drive itself failed, the only thing I can think of is that the flexi coupling somehow got disconnected from the motor or from the worm drive? It may be possible just to remove the inner backrest lining, it is only hooked on at the top of the backrest frame and at the bottom back of the seat frame. Then you would be able to see the drive mechanism. It was a pain to unhook those hooks though when you can see them. unless! unless the bracket that moves up and down can move off the worm drive at the end of its run, then the threads are not engaging so it cant move back up. However in that case a strong pull should have moved it back on the worm drive? Does the head rest come out easily when you pull it? http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1416525115 |

The backrest insert leather piece is not connected to anything along its sides, if you are coming I can bring my ebay keyhole camera 7mm in case it is possible to see if something is disconnected?
|
OK thanks, not sure if I can make it; lastminute decision will decide.
Not sure what you mean about unattached leather as I can't see any. Do you know how the headrests are detached, or is there a fixing that can only be reached with the backrest detached? The motor sound is much faster than the other (working) side so I presume the drive is disconnected somewhere, but catching as it's a ratchet-like sound not just a whirring motor. |

push your fingers between where the edge of backrest inner cushions and the side bolster piece meet. You will see they are not attached to eachother its a friction fit, and you should feel plastic or metal of the backrest frame if your finger goes far enough.
This may be enough space to squeeze a keyhole / endoscopic camera behind the backrest cushion to see if the flexi drive is detached, but its going to be very fiddly. I will see tonight how the headrest is attached, there seem to be metal clips, and the bottom of the posts seem to plug into plastic mounts on the bracket which moves along the worm drive. I don't want to make a suggestion that's going to cause you to break something, but have you tried having someone operate the motor upwards and putting quite a bit of force into pulling the headrest up? maybe it needs some force to jump back onto the worm drive? http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1416570771 |
I really can't find any gaps, it's the REAR seats I'm talking about not the front.
Did try levering again, a bit more carefully but firmly and the headrest I think popped out of the bracket on the worm drive, so now moves up and down totally freely. Motor still makes exactly the same noise as before and does nothing. As you've got a front seat apart I have another question but I'll continue in another thread for that. ;) See: http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/showthread.php?t=5950 |
Sprog may have chicken pox, so doubtful I can now attend. He's had it before but apparently if they're run down it's possible to catch it again - half his school appears to have it at the moment!
If the spots he's developing disappear then it may just be a rash, but we're never that lucky..... |

By a quirk of fate I'm actually sat in the fairmile at the moment checking it out! I dropped a customer at Twickenham and they are not out until after 10:30 tonight so I thought I'd pop over and take advantage of their hospitality and watch the scotland and Wales matches :D
|
About 30-40 minutes from me, might make it if my headrest is going to get fixed.....
|
Lol more likely to be fixed tomorrow at the meet Andrew But you're welcome to pop over! It sounds from earlier comments that something has become detached from the mechanism but the motor is still working. You're welcome to pop over to Swindon sometime and we'll try and sort it out for you +++

Will they let us fix it in the bar do you think? :D

Do I see Otter for sale even if a bit "laid back"? My local has it at present and it's very tasty. :D

OK, so I "might" have a pass. What time are you eating as I'll either have lunch or not be there? Neil I presume your mobile is still the same 07794 one?

Cheers Neil, I'll text you if I'm coming. Will aim to get there as soon after 12 as I can. Is it the sort of place that needs tables booking for Sunday Lunch?
