Back in a D2

My D3 was sold as I never really loved it and to be honest it was not as good as my old D2 in many ways (Quality, did not feel special etc).

Therefore the only option was to buy another D2 and this time I wanted an S8. Lovely place to be and just a very good car, plus it came from a fellow forum member which is always a bonus.

Great result for both! +++
Im sure you enjoyed the drive back! :D

moltuae 15th November 2014 08:19 AM

Nice +++

Is than an FE?

Very similar looking to my FE S8 (of which I'm still meaning to take some pictures and post here when I get chance), externally at least anyway ... same age, wheels, etc. Mine's pearl black, which I often find looks deep blue in some lighting. Yours looks a deep purple in that shot ... or is that just the lighting (or my screen?). Also, my S8 has the pale/cream interior.

Funny thing is, after owning my D2 for over 4 years now, I came very close to replacing it with a D3 this year. For a number of reasons I eventually chose not to; instead I spent over £3K on the D2 to restore it to its former glory. I just couldn't bring myself to part with it and, it's been such a good car, it seemed crazy to spend thousands more just to have something a few years newer.

But the main reason for me was that I just haven't taken to the shape of the later '8s. Certainly they're more modern looking -- sexier even -- but they're somehow soulless next to an old D2. When you see a D2 it has a distinguished presence. It stands out from the crowd and the size of the car is obvious. D3s, on the other hand, I frequently pass without noticing; they can be easily mistaken for a smaller car, I find.

EDIT: Ah, just released you bought this: http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/showthread.php?t=8904

Very nice :)

So, more of a deep (ming) blue with a hint of purple then.

Sir WIll 15th November 2014 09:38 AM

No its not a Final Edition, and in my mind all the better for it.

FEs were certain colours and on the whole very strange leather colours. Plus the spec on FEs tended not to be as good as they were fixed special editions.

D3 rides better, Sat Nav is better and the stereo is better. Apart from that the D2 is a much better made car and just genuinely a nicer place to sit.

Great decision, and a great car by the looks of it. As I'd said on the "for sale" post from the previous owner, I was tempted by this one, and I'm glad it has gone to a good home, and looking forward to seeing it in the flesh at a forum meet +++

M-A8 15th November 2014 01:48 PM

I'm so happy for you mate, and so jealous at the same time
Amazing car, sorry amazing S8.
Enjoy it mate +++

gninnam 15th November 2014 05:47 PM

Well done +++

Do miss the D2 but not enough funds so............:(

Goran 16th November 2014 11:13 AM

Nice car, black interior is best +++
I have to say though, having sat in Neil's A8L D3, its a very nice interior and I was very tempted to switch to a D3. And the aircon was much better in the D3.

Architex_mA8tey 17th November 2014 12:18 AM

And the legroom is better :rolleyes:
Good job we went and sat in it as it saved me a parking ticket +++
I know what others mean through - the D2 is still just something special and feels totally different, a real classic which I still love to drive mine way more, it just has more character and personality

mattylondon 17th November 2014 08:41 AM

This forum is making me want a D2... :D

David's8 17th November 2014 09:25 AM

Looks like a trend is starting here +++...... the price of D2's is about to rise! :)

Sir WIll 17th November 2014 11:19 AM

I spent a while looking for a good D2 S8.

On the whole there is only 4 or 5 for sale in the UK at any time on eBay/ Pistonheads/ Autotrader.

Mostly the cars for sale are at a dealer and no idea what it is or mention any of the key areas. Or owners who bought one, not done anything with it apart from put nasty alloys on it now selling it as it has problems they fail to mention in the advert.

No car will be perfect but at the very least good history, cambelt and gearbox are an absolute must.

Its great to be back in a D2, and my new S8 is actually better condition than my old one which is always a bonus.

Its not perfect of course, the CD changer has decided to throw a senior moment its nothing to change them out.

I've got a spare one which I was given a while ago so you're welcome to it for the price of shipping, or collect. +++

(Also have a TV tuner (earlier sort with odd aerial connectors) and some spare mounting brackets.)

Excellent Sir Will! A truly stunning car, but I would say that, it looks like mine! Aqua Blue Pearl I assume!

Who uses CDs now anyway?

Put an XCarLink unit it. 10 mins installation. Bluetooth your tunes from a phone or tablet. Problem solved :)

Anyway, you got a V8. What more music do you need? :D

HPsauce 17th November 2014 12:34 PM

I've got an XcarLink as well. ;)

Sir WIll 17th November 2014 07:28 PM

You cannot besmirch an S8 by letting a part in it remain faulty!

It must all work perfectly and be as it came out the factory at all times!

Yes, Ming Blue lovely colour it is indeed +++

notorious 18th November 2014 09:37 PM

Great news. Back to basics.
Yes, D2 is better +++

M-A8 18th November 2014 10:01 PM

We looking to upgrade our second car and for the past few days I'm drilling my missus head about D2 S8, but she absolutely can't stand the look from outside - I may just divorce her, she hurt my feelings too much.

This would be ideal situation for me, finally having D2 and D3 on the driveway, but she just wont drive it :-(

ainarssems 19th November 2014 05:39 AM

Give her D3 and buy D2 for yourself.

The_Laird 19th November 2014 06:43 AM

My thoughts exactly! :)

Delboy 19th November 2014 06:57 AM

I say divorce her, they are a constant source of expenditure, extremely high in the maintenance department, get increasingly difficult to look after as they get older, oh wait that may just be the cars I'm talking about there and we love them dearly.

Does your missus drive the D3, I can't honestly see her enjoying popping to the shops with that exhaust you have on at the mo.

As already said the common sense answer is to buy a D2 and you use it.

I would have made some remark about her having poor taste when it comes to looks and style - but that would reflect badly on you Marcin ;) Perhaps she just needs to see some real life examples and to drive one? My missus loves driving it apart from its size when parking. Can you not persuade someone on here to "drop by" one day and show her a fine example (of a D2 that is).

Women outnumber S8s millions to one.

You'll soon find another good one (wife that is).

Goran 19th November 2014 08:22 AM

just get her to drive one, once she does she wont care about the outside.

Sir WIll 24th November 2014 10:45 PM

A week in.....

I got a little over 200 miles on £40 of LPG +++

Excellent as a daily runabout and without doubt one of the best made cars Audi have ever released.

Loses a little poke on LPG but above 5000 rpm the engine kicks over to petrol and you have no idea its doing it apart from the additional boost of power.

Its not quite as quick as my E39 M5 and that did have a better chassis; but the S8 is much better made and better mile muncher. Also its a little quicker than my D3 4.2 in gears but looses out a little as it has 5 instead of 6 ratios.

Saying that the gearbox is a honey as its only done 10,000 since the people at Mackies did everything on it.

400 miles in 5 hours back from Scotland last weekend was dispatched with an ease that nothing I have driven come close to (though I admit that's mainly been work hire cars including Mondeos/ Insignias/ Lexus IS/ Golfs etc).
