Wanted? Thinking about 9-spoke 20" D2 S8 FE wheels
I guess you just get there eventually.....
Now I've got the winter wheels on I'm looking at refurbishing the summer ones (standard FL 18" Avus) and getting at least 2 new tyres, maybe 3 depending how I play the spare. Which got me thinking - why not look for some 20's for next summer then move the winter tyres onto the FL18's leaving me a set of 5 allegedly still desirable PF Avus 18's to sell on with some fairly decent tyres too. I see A8parts have a set of 4 on eBay but they look pretty rough round the rims, does anyone else have any available now or in the near future? Also, for anyone who has them now, do you normally have a full set of 5 or is the spare something different? |

So no problem with the spare wheel well? I wondered if the lower profile tyre might be a bit "squarer" so not fit properly.
|
I'm the same as Jim - full set of 5 on both the 18" winter set and 20" summer set (plus the original 20" diamond cut set for special events +++).
The fit for the 18" wheel is fine in the spare wheel well, since the overall wheel+tyre diameter is practically the same for both the 18s and 20s, due to the deeper sidewall on the 18" tyres, though the 20" is a slightly more "snug" fit. |
Oh dear, 3 sets, I can't compete with that.
I can feel my wallet getting ready to open already, but does anyone have any for sale? |
Can someone tell me what width the FE 20" wheels are and what the "standard" tyre size is?
(The closest 20" equivalent to 245/45 R18 would be 245/35 R20) |
I would maybe sell my set (of 4) from the D3 which are 9" wide if you'd be interested?
|
Are those the ones you were having refurbished maybe 6 months ago?
What Audi part number are they and would they fit OK - offset, etc.? |
Didn't the Final Edition cars with 20" wheels have stronger (or different) arms?
I notice my car's previous owner had 20" FE wheels on a car that wasn't optioned for them and he changed the front arms in 2012 (it was a November 2001 model). Or maybe it doesn't matter, front arms wear out anyway with time? |
I'm not sure it really matters. My first A8 was a late 2002 A8 2.8 QS and it had 20" FE wheels fitted from new (according to the build sticker) and I don't suppose Audi changed the suspension arms for this. but I did come a cropper when I ordered a set of arms for the FE S8 as 2 of the arms were supposedly wrong.
But I'm pretty sure that it wasn't just S8s that were fitted with FE 20" wheels, let alone just the FE S8s. |
Andrew, I've got four 9 spoke 20" FE wheels with 275/35/20 Vredestiens on which have done around 2k miles since refurbishment (new tyres after refurb)and have been stored since I took them off my D2 a year ago.
Let me know if you're interested +++ |

Are they diamond-cut refurbished (as new?) or fully repainted? And what exact model/spec tyres? |
Standard tyre size was 255/35 ZR 20.
Rims were 20x8.5 for a D2 |
I'll post the full spec details later for both d2 and d3 fit if nobody else does :) am on route home from Birmingham at the moment
Basically d3 rim is 0.5" wider and a slightly larger tyre size. From memory the d3 rims fill the arches slightly better so I wouldn't rule out a d3 set as they're likely to be much newer/better condition A diamond cut set will be fairly hard to find as only really a couple of places that can do the refurbs. It's easier to get them powder coated and painted which is what most do. Can thoroughly recommend Michelin super sports for summer tyres if they come without :) |
OK, precise wheel specs:
D2 8.5Jx20 ET45 4d0601025ae 255/35R20 97 ZR(Y) XL D3 9Jx20 ET46 4e0601025af 275/35R20 102 ZR(Y) XL I would say the extra width isn't a major issue. Details on the fitting here: http://www.willtheyfit.com/index.php...et2=46#content Sticking out an extra 5mm will fill the front arches quite nicely, although the rears on mine (8.5") are spaced out 20mm! The higher load index of the tyre intended for the D3 won't help the ride quality - if fitting new tyres to 9" rims on a D2 finding some in 97 load index would be beneficial. There's a 98 available for Super Sports The change in rolling radius will help the gearing at motorway speeds, although not by very much! |
mine are for sale too

Complete with new tyres that have maybe done 4000 miles. I'd be looking £1,000. I can get photos if interested. |
Thanks folks, so far at least 3 sets of 4 seem to be around (Lyons, Norretal and Roberto), but if I'm reading it right they're all 9" D3 ones with wider tyres (275 vs 255) and one at least is still diamond cut. All seem to be just 4, not 5, or is that normal for D3 - spare different?
On the other hand, ideally I'm after 5 of the 8.5" D2 variety and last time I looked A8parts did actually have 5 of those in need of a refurb. I need to check out the options and put my thinking cap on. This might have to wait until after Xmas, but given the time some of these have been available that doesn't seem to be a problem. Keep the options and information flowing. :D |

Also 245/35R20 is almost exactly (within 1mm) the same as 245/45R18 whereas 255/35 is just over 1% bigger. Does anyone use or have used 245/35R20? |
