Ignition or RNS switched live in the boot?
hello :)
Following my successful installation of the RNS-E, i am now moving onto fitting a DAB radio. This is one of type that re-broadcasts on a FM signal - it works pretty well when i tested it powered from the cig lighter. now: i want to install the box properly in the boot, and to do this i need either an ignition live, or preferably a RNS live that only comes on when the head unit is active. i have removed the 6 disc CD player and also the old analogue TV tuner, so i thought it would be relatively easy to find one of lives that i need from their now unused plugs... no, cant find one anywhere! ive looked through elsawin at the current flow diagrams but this isnt massively helpful (or im reading it very wrong!) does anyone know where i can find a RNS or ignition switched live in the boot? i plan to mount the DAB unit in either the left or right cubbyhole thanks :) andy |

There's one in the CD changer lead, I tapped into it to provide power for a DVB-T tuner though haven't actually permanently fitted it yet.
Not 100% sure off the top of my head which it is BUT many of the diagrams online are incorrect so get a meter on it! Edit: Here's the diagram I corrected, but as I said, get a meter on the cables to be 100% sure. I think the switched one is RNS-switched. And I also don't remember if this layout is the CD changer tail or the plug on the loom, which is a mirror of it. I actually tapped into the CD changer lead as it was easy to remove it from the car and do it on a bench. If you don't have a CD changer just buy the appropriate DIN-style connector/plug and attach appropriate wires to it. (Or hack it off a redundant changer!) |
superb, that's just the kind of thing i was looking (unsuccessfully) for!
the diagram looks like its showing the loom end of the plug. now all i need is a plug to butcher, or a single pin to get the feed i need :) |
Just buy a 13-pin DIN connector, I think that's what they are. Male or female as required. Will cover up all the other pins too and keep it tidy.

i was going to cut the connector off the now defunct CD player, but i have taken a punt on a £4 13-pin DIN connector off ebay. it seems theyre the same as the MIDI sockets. Hopefully it will arrive by the weekend i can confirm it fits and the wiring colours are correct. then i will have contributed something to the community :)

Maybe you could confirm my modified diagram is correct AND whether or not the switched 12v is switched by the RNS.
Remember the RNS has various timeouts in it so that switched 12v may not go off immediately if you turn it on then off to test. I took 3 wires off mine in my own mini-loom: +12v constant, +12v switched and 0v (Ground). The TV tuner I have uses a constant supply for some purpose, though not as far as I can tell for station memory, possibly some other settings (e.g. contrast/brightness). |
