Mpg

Hi
I have a A8 2.8ltr but would like the 4.2 but i have an issue with economy as i have read that the 4.2 is just as economical as the 2.8ltr yet some say this is not possible, so i am now putting the question to the ones that know, that is the forum members as you are the true judge being the owners of the aforementioned vehicles.
Many thanks for all replies+++

To answery your question, assuming your car is pre 2001, then yes, the 2.8 is more frugal, but not by as much as you would imagine.

For what the 2.8 saves in cubes, it chews up in revving harder to move the car about, so its false economy really.....

But - Pre 2001, the 2.8 was only front wheel drive, where the 4.2 was always quattro and Quattro does inevitably add a little bit of drag, but its worth it... +++

I'd expect 30-35 from a 2.8 on a long run, and 27-30 from a 4.2 A8. The S8 will perform much worse though, 20-24mpg.

The 4.2 is worth it, as you get the quattro, twin pane glass and generally a much higher spec car overall.... plus the extra 103bhp of course :-)

I am starting to learn how to drive my 4.2 '99 A8 Sport and have been trying to take it easy. The best I can get at the moment is 22.6 mpg. I have had it about 4 months now and for the first few month I was only getting about 20mpg (I was certainly using to much right foot and it took me a while to settle down to the right sensitivity level and get used to being back in an auto)

Should I be seeing better results from my 4.2 Sport?

Depends how much town driving you're doing...

If I'm just nipping in and out to the office, I tend to get very low 20's, on a motorway run, getting about 30 (at 80kph) in both the D2 and D3.

Never had more than 22.6 even on a long run!

Did you reset the computer before you started your journey, I used to see 30 in my old A8.

E.L.M.O 7th July 2009 11:18 AM

nope! errrrrm how do you reset it? :S

Singh 7th July 2009 11:38 AM

On the wiper stalk, there is a button on the right hand side of it, push that button for about 3 seconds untill it resets +++

E.L.M.O 7th July 2009 12:08 PM

Right, got you.... Hold down 3 seconds. No probs. I will reset it before my trip away this weekend and we can analyze the results then!

Edited because of very embarrassing, stupid spelling mistake!
