Front nearside seized brake caliper
hi, i have read thread re. seized callipers esp the rear ones. esp the left?NS
options: 1) DIY fix/repair kit 2) buy second/refurbished any opinions on which direction i should take? i want to keep costs down. also any names of firms/websites... cheers raj |
Hi Raj, I went for refurbed ones, I couldn't wait I was in a hurry to pass the MOT.
arrived very quickly, seem to be working fine, when I sent my old ones back the refund came very quickly. Not bad for £95. Although you do have to pay for postage back for the old ones. http://brakeparts.co.uk/#!/shop/AUDI...inders/BCA3812 You could try this first, get yourself some ACF-50 spray, if the handbrake lever on the caliper is stiff but still moves a bit. Keep spraying it in there, moving the lever back and forth, to get it moving again. http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/showpost....0&postcount=12 |
You can buy referb kits for around £25 for the front axle (Lucas / Girling) if you don't mind getting your hands dirty, or if you need them in a rush recon exchange.

You might also like to check out SKS Car Parts:
http://www.skscarparts.co.uk/ I ordered a pair of front calipers from them a few months back, refurbed Lucas ones, and they're fine. Didn't bother sending the old ones back as it would cost me more from N. Ireland than the refund. |
thanks for the quick replies.
i am pretty good with DIY, how did you get the callipers off? which 2 bolts did you have to undue? was it triple square?/standard hex?or something strange only to audi that needs a specialist tool. i have found 2 'bolts' that are under some rubber bungs with some strange head/interface shape. thanks raj |
Definitely not the ones under the rubber bungs. It's too late to check now, but I'm pretty sure they were standard bolt heads on them, nothing special, as they were a bugger to shift (had a torque setting of 200Nm). I used the service manual for the brake system in the tech dump thread below, to make sure I ordered the correct one:

Big Hex bolts 18mm i think

you could not make this up.
now the Offside caliper has seized. this is on a car that is used daily. |
Front? I would replace in pairs anyway really, if one has gone the other won't be far behind.
