Bluetooth telephone prep
Hi guys
I am new to the a8 and have just purchased 06 plate 4.2tdi se. I am confused on whether it has bluetooth or not. If I press phone it says telephone not installed, if a search on my phone or my partners phone it doesn't show any new devise to pair with. Checked my mmi version and it shows 21.2.0.0534. I've read various things but wanted to ask here, so do they all have Bluetooth as standard? Do I just need mmi update to make it work? Or do I need to upgrade some hardware in the car? The manual just talks about a handset but I don't have one just what looks like a connection for one under the centre arm rest. I hate not having hands free in the car and really wanted to avoid 3rd party systems. Any advise is much appreciated Cheers Paul |
The phone module is an optional extra, not all models have it. Those that do not will show not installed when you press the button.
I have a phone in my D3, its not even bluetooth and is a fixed car phone with a bluetooth handset. There is also a proper bluetooth module, which I am reasonably sure can be retrofitted and coded. |
Sounds like I want the proper bluetooth module then, do you have a part number so i can have a search around for one?

The problem is the parts ain't cheap and your going to need the wiring loom as well. Hazydayz offer a supply and fit service but at a cost.

If you have the older style handset based phone, swapping to a full Bluetooth module is a doddle... Its hard to believe an 06 plate left the factory with no phone capability.... (edit) especially on a 4.2Tdi. On the early Bluetooth, the module only shows up for pairing for a few minutes after the ignition comes on, but the [setup] button on the telephone screen would give options implying Bluetooth functionality..... I just can't believe an 06 wouldn't have Bluetooth, so as an outside thought I wonder if someone did a firmware update and cooked it.... (sadly a common issue on firmware upgrades) |
Thanks for all the comments, here are some pictures

Hi,
The handset cradle plate in the photo would indicate to me that the car has factory bluetooth fitted. We have the same cradle plate in our 2006 Q7 with phone prep/bluetooth. The "not installed" message would mean the bluetooth module is probably coded out or bypassed with a fibre optic loop. Might be worth having a look for the bluetooth module under the carpet in front of the passenger seat. The carpet can be pulled back for access from under the glovebox once the plastic trims on the door sill have been unclipped/removed. As previously said, the bluetooth modules are prone to failure. The one on the Q7 was replaced last year but thankfully, the local dealer got a goodwill contribution from Audi and it was replaced for about €200. |
Mmm I noticed the trim was loose on the passenger side and thought it was odd for such a well built car the clips where broken so maybe the previous owner has been trying to sort something out. Will check it out mabe take another photo and report back. Again I have to say i appreciate the advise. Cheers Paul

Given that you're in York.. Maybe a trip to the forum sponsors may be worthwhile, they could do you a scan of the car, check coding and then see about sourcing you a unit if needed :)
