D3 on mot test brake rollers

went with my friends daughter for an mot yesterday in her golf
she tends to get ripped off so i went along
anyway the golf passed

when we arrived there was a 2009 D3 on the brake rollers being mot'd
they just drove it on as normal tested the front and rear brakes
so i questioned the mot man .. that audi is a quattro and i didn't you could do that ?
he said oh no its ok our new rollers detect whether its ok to continue and it only goes a few mph so doesn't make any difference

Is he right ?

ive had lots of quattros and they have been driven up the road every time to test the brakes...

I always wait at the garage while the MOT is being done and it's always done on regular brake tester for all the quattros I have had and Freelander as well, never had any issues.

My tester always uses a tapley meter on the road with my Quattro D3, as he said the rollers causes undue stress on the Torsen diff which overtime could cause premature failure. The same at the previous test centre I used until a couple of years ago.

Modern roller brake testers rotate the wheels on each axle in reverse directions, so each wheel is tested in the forward direction, but when they're doing the other side you should be able to see the non-tested side going backwards :D

It means the axle isn't being wound up and nothing is being transmitted down the propshaft

The MOT testing manual states.

Quote:

Vehicles not to be tested on a roller brake tester
Certain vehicles should not be tested on a roller brake tester, e.g. vehicles with

· More than one driving axle permanently engaged

· Limited-slip differential

My mot chap has never used the rollers on my Audi's in the past. Also with my TVR he uses the meter and a quick test down the drive as she is far to low for the rollers  and they replaced all their gear last year with these new fangled remote control rollers and lifts that shake the sh*t out of the poor motor !

proper mechanical LSDs can't be tested on these rollers, but the electronic ones are fine as they recognise they're being tested and won't lock up.

I've never had the 8 on roller brake testers either, its been driven down the road with the doo dah in the footwell. Is there a definitive answer to the modern rollers being used? As it stands I wouldn't be happy with it going on rollers...

My MOT test station is run by a guy I know well and I asked him first time in with the S8 and he said the matchine rolls the opposite wheel backwards through the diff so the centre Torsen has no load.

He did not however know about the air suspension trying to compensate when the axles are being lifted independent of each other in the test ramp.

So remember to put it in jacking mode prior dropping it off.

On the road they can only test deceleration, not brake balance. If it's out a lot tester would feel a car pulling to one side but that could also be down to suspension issues not just brake balance.

Ideally you would have 4 wheel brake tester like the 4 wheel dyno but that would also increase MOT test time strapping car down and increased costs. I am not even sure if anybody makes 4 wheel brake testers.
