SW update again

sorry guys trolled through lots here but could not see an answer so hence another SW thread. I have managed to update my mmi to latest version, however I cannot seem to update cd 2. When I try to update for some reason none of the items on list are selected. They all have N besides them. When I try pressing update it states that nothing has been selected ??? Can anyone advise what I need to do, shall I try cd 3 instead? My car has phone in armrest and BT. I have got 2016 maps and 3d function works (thanks to Marcin). My car is 2006 4.2L tdi.+++

Sorry if this is a repeat.

Do disk 3. Disk 2 is for the problematic early bluetooth units

Thnx bud, so I can skip disc 2 and jump straight to disc 3?
Thnx

PsYcHe 13th March 2016 11:10 AM

Yup. Disk 2 was separated to perform a special process on the old BT units.

H-M3 13th March 2016 11:24 AM

Cheers. When you say old BT does that not include my 2006?

PsYcHe 13th March 2016 01:41 PM

Possibly... I did Disk 3 and then disk 2 again in mine.

H-M3; BlueTooth phone support is not based on the year of the car, it is based on the type of phone ECU you have installed as "77-Telephone" in your A8 and which, in pre 'late 2008' builds, could be one of three types.

Type 1 ECUs [4E0 862 333] have four connections with a blue connector.
Type 2 ECUs [4F1 862 335] have four connections with a black connector.
Type 3 ECUs [4E0 862 335] have three connections with a black connector.

I believe you have the original Type 1, as you seem to have the Motorola handset in the armrest and BlueTooth phones don't connect. This is NOT a 'proper' BlueTooth ECU [which have a diifferent VCDS description], even though it DOES use BlueTooth to allow the optional Motorola handset to connect to the ECU, so that you can use the handset rather that the car's audio system!

If you have VCDS, the Type 1 ECU shows as "TELEFONMODUL EU HW: 4E0 862 333 x" and should have the newest [and final] version of the software - 0770. This is the number on the same line as "Component: TELEFONMODUL EU".

As far as the MMI CDs go, CD1 in the 3 CD set is level 5150 of MMI and CD3 is level 5570. CD3 contains all the device firmware updates that 5150 includes plus updates to the B&O Sound system, Radio and Hybrid TV. You don't need to run CD1 unless you have a very old MMI [earlier than 0890] from a 2003/2004 car; most users will only need 5570. If a Type 1 ECU is not at level 0770, CD1 and/or CD3 will update it. But there are no BT ECU updates on these CDs!

CD2 is a dedicated BlueTooth ECU update CD; I presume it updates the other two ECU Types.

Thanks for your detailed response, so does that mean I don't have BT feature on my car? so is it not worth doing the update using cd2? I will try cd 3 very soon and see if that makes any difference.
Thanks+++

Thanks Julian,
You have just clarified the detail for me.
I will shortly be retro fitting the newer "HandyVorb".

"Handy" is what the Germans call their mobile phones whilst we say "mobile".

See, I am full of useless information. +++

Does BT mean BT? ...

Sounds like I'm being picky but you are not the first to be confused by the A8 phone options in cars built before week 36/08. [The Motorola handset option disappeared after this build date]. All A8 phone ECUs have BT and I believe anything [phone, laptop] that recognises BT signals will detect the A8's signal.

However, the "TELEFONMODUL EU" ECU has a BT signal that can ONLY be connected with the optional Audi Motorola handset in the arm. [This original 'use the car system' phone option was £500 and the handset was a £100 option on top of that]. This ECU is designed to be used with the car's sound system and the BT aerial can be turned off by adaptation if you don't have/use the Motorola handset.

I would suggest that this is not what most people mean by a BT system. To aid this confusion, these original "use the car system" ECUs are described misleadingly as BT units on some auction sites.

The other 2 phone ECUs have a BT signal that can be used with [some] cellphones. These ECUs are designed to be used with your own phone. I would suggest that this is what most want out of a BT phone system,

I have the "TELEFONMODUL EU" ECU myself so can't comment on the 'proper BlueTooth' ones but NEITHER ARE A STRAIGHT SWAP for the "TELEFONMODUL EU" ones as they have different connects. [Watch out for that Ray].

Regards - Julian

"TELEFONMODUL EU" ECU is 4E0 862 333 x - has blue 42pin electrical connector, MOST optical, BT & GSM aerial connects
"Handyvorb2" ECU is 4E0 862 335 x - has black 54pin electrical connector, MOST optical and BT aerial connects
"BTA" ECU is 4F1 862 335 X - has black 54pin electrical connector, MOST optical, BT & GSM aerial connects.

NOTE: These ECUs are NO USE in post week 35/08 cars; those cars use totally different ECUs.

You can identify which ECU is in the car by running VCDS against ECU 77 or by clicking 'Setup' and 'Return' keys on the MMI and holding them for 5 seconds to see the undocumented red-coloured MMI Info. screens ...
