Looking to update maps on 2009 A8.

As per title, I have a 2009 A8 which, unless I'm mistaken , has the hard drive (HDD?) navigation.

I'd like some more recent maps , but am getting confused with talk of updating MMI operating systems etc..Is this necessary?
To my knowledge everything currently works as it should.

What do I need to do, is it a part of the 3 disc MMI update discs I read about here, or is it more simple if I just want more up to date maps?

Thanks in advance,

Iain

I am about to do the same with mine. As far as I know, it has to be done via dealer and may need MMI updates to go along with SatNav update. I was quoted £160 for the lot by my local dealer. Not sure there is another way to do it with the HDD based versions. :(

As your car, like mine is 2009, it may have the 3G MMI, which is nothing at all like the older 2G MMI and the CDs just wont work. Completely different code.

Do you both have Google maps, or the pre-3G Plus setup?

If you have the '3G' setup then I can probably help - probably best to post up your current setup info as per the pic below:

OK.. Here is mine. I think it's classed as "3G High". It's not the Plus version, nor the Google version.

Hi Lee

Yep, that's 3G (aka tech pack high on some models that had the option of 'tech pack low' for a DVD setup)

That's the production level firmware (the P in software version confirms it) so it's never been updated. Maps look to be original too.

Do you have SD card slots?

I don't suppose you're South East based?

Hi Adrian.

I do have 2 SD card slots, but no, I'm South Wales. Is there a DIY way of updating the maps on these cars then? The dealer told me that I may need an MMI update too. They're looking into it for me but I haven't agreed on anything yet.

Be sitting down when they quote you for it - think £250-500 depending on hours of labour

It is DIYable but you ideally need a reasonably meaty broadband connection, a fair bit of patience, a 32gb high speed SD card and ideally access to VCDS. Oh and a back up power supply and half a day for firmware and maps!

I've done it 3 times now on our S5 and have a guide to walk you through it.

See what they quote and if it sounds worth the aggro I'm happy to walk you through it :)

I have all of those things (VCDS, 32GB type 10 cards, 80MB ADSL and plenty of patience - whats a backup power supply? Battery charger?) But yeah. The last quote was £195 I think and they did say it could take 3 or 4 hours to do some kind of update (MMI I guess) but that they wouldn't charge me for that. Not too bad I guess but I will find out. Thanks for the info though. I will let you know what they say and if it's too much I may give it a go myself. +++

Yep, battery charger connected is the best plan to stop it getting drained.

Doing the firmware updates depends how many are required (I haven't checked exactly but there's a fair few!) and maps is about 2.5-3 hours.

When the maps are running I just check on it every half an hour or so till I know it's nearly done

Attached my version details... can someone decipher please?

I'd be happy to pay a few quid for newer maps, but £200+ is ludicrous when good TomTom or similar with camera locations and 7 digit post code entry is half that!

Okay...what's my options please, someone of higher IT intellect please make it simple for the welder in the room to process, lol.

I too have SD card slots...and a DVD drive if that matters?
