really hot exhaust. normal?
hi,
2006 4.2 TDi. stepped out of the car and i smelt a whiff of burning. thought it was a sticking calliper. all seemed fine. however i heard the clicking of the exhaust and the tips very very hot. this has not happened before. could this be the DPF burning the soot? any guidance please? thanks raj |
Yep. That's a DPF burn off or regeneration. Normally does it when you've been going over 2000 rpm for more than a few minutes. Nothing to worry about. If it hasn't finished then it will just do it again until it finishes I think. You can force it to finish by selecting a low gear like 3rd on a good clear road such as a motorway and keep it at 3000 rpm for a while. Something like that anyway...:ROFL:

many thanks for the quick reply Lee.
the 4.2 tdi is so torquey that 3000rpm is equivalent to 90mph in a 30mph zone :) |

i have come to the D3 forum from the D2.
having had lots of nice cars the D2 4.2 was the best daily car i had owned. the engine was a beauty. i said i would not drive a diesel again. after driving the 4.2 Tdi torque/acceleration is stunning. the power delivery at 1500prm upwards is incomparable. aged 45, i am no street racer but i will defiantly will be getting her remapped to see where she ends up. very different power delivery to a petrol. money no object = S8 |
