No sound from drivers door speaker

2007 3.0tdi with std stereo (not bose or b&o). Just one speaker in each front door.

Since I got the car, there has been no sound from the drivers door. Changing the balance and fader across the ranges I can get sound from each extreme except the driver door.

I removed the speaker and plugged it into the passenger door and it worked fine so I know it isn't the speaker itself.

So I think the options are;-

Wiring (nightmare to trace and check I assume)
Amplifier (any tests I can do to check for output on that channel?)
Or component protection (would it stop just one speaker?)

Any suggestions or things I can test?

Michael

I don't know the answer but the silence sounds expensive

A thought (and probably bump to keep my thread alive!)
If you borrowed a vagcom would it tell me if there was component protection on the amplifier at least then I could take it in for a specific task and shop around.

Hi Michael,

Yes, VCDS would report the Amp in CP. I think it would also report if there is a short to ground or open circuit with the speakers.

I guess you don't have VCDS, so as you have the door card off I would test the speaker wiring with a multi meter back to the plug at the amp. Wiring diagrams and pin outs can be found in the D3 tech dump, document 2-Current Flow, to assist you. Good luck +++

Edit
VCDS can also do a speaker test. It's worth borrowing if you can.

Thanks - Julian

Hi Julian,

Open the sound system module then Output Tests, this cycles a test tone to each speaker. Take a pair of ear defenders as it loud!

Thanks for that Matty;

tried that - it IS LOUD - had to give up at first speaker as I thought you were joking about the defenders and I didn't have any!
