2007 S8 running costs

I have my eye on a 2007 S8. This particular one has a FASH with the last service 1.5k ago (now at 86k).

Ignoring fuel and insurance costs, would I be foolish to believe £2k per year would cover maintenance costs (assuming 8000 miles per year maximum).

if your servicing by yourself then your servicing budget more than covers it and if you save the difference you will have money in reserve.

nice looking car btw.

if your not familiar with the s8 take someone with you who is as theres lots of bits to check over

Make sure you budget for fuel. They are extremely thirsty. Those cheeky engine blips whilst stationary are about £1 each!

The guy in his D3 S8 in stop start traffic, driving down the strand in Liverpool the other week must have spent about £10 in pure blippage. Sounded like he had the key to the gates of hell under his right foot.

Hope this helps... I've been tracking everything since I bought her on the 14th of January.

Audi do a fixed price service online for the S8 - £399, includes all 10 spark plugs :-)

Very grateful for all the figures and input.

I've come to the realisation that I can probably afford to maintain an S8, but not to put fuel in it!

After budgeting for everything else including my Audi A3 I'd only have enough realistically to pay for 4000 miles worth of fuel per year. That's based on 19.2 mpg, though if I drop to 15mpg, then it's 3000 miles. Gorgeous cars but not worth the outlay in my case with so few miles :(

I still want one despite it being ruinous :hammer:

I'm lucky in that I'm self employed and bill clients at 45p a mile so I am quids in on fuel, but if my situation was different I couldn't justify the cost, however, don't let this put you off, have a look at the 4.2 TDI - it might pleasantly surprise you, and a test drive is free

I can never remember with the D3 - is the 4.2 TDi the one to go for as opposed to the 4.0 TDi? I know one of them is more troublesome but can't remember which.

For the cost of this S8 I am just into D4 territory. I hadn't realised that the 3.0 TDi's were so quick compared to the D3 3.0 TDi's.

Found two near me which look promising:

D3 S8 Running costs

Hi Kev,

Another viewpoint for you on running and enjoying an S8.

Service and Consumables
Long life service every 15000 miles £400 except at 60,00 mile intervals where allow £600.
Tyres - 10- 12000 per set, allow £250/corner.
Brakes - assume disks every 60000 miles (£400) and pads every 30000 miles (£300).

Typical faults- why you buy a warranty and don't use a stealer
Typically around 80,000 - 120,000 miles you will get suspension compressor failure (generic A8 D3, not just S8), assume £300 with repair kit.

If you are unlucky, power steering pump failure , assume £2500, engine out job.

Buy or borrow a copy of VCDS and find a good indy mechanic who knows how to fault find and learn to live with some none impacting messages.

Driving and engine comparisons
Ian (IT) will be along to give you the best view of 5.2V10 vs. 4.2TDI vs. 3.0 TDI in D3 and D4, but nothing matches the noise and zing of the throttle response (light flywheel equivalent) of the V10. After over 4 years and 100,000 miles, it still gives me a buzz!

S8s were well specced originally, compared with some others, so if you like the toys, you get more as standard on an S8.

Plan on 20 mpg out of town and 15 mpg around the houses. But with 8000 miles a year, not that much difference even vs. 40 mpg diesel.

Good luck and good hunting

ps fun on track, see ADI pictures!! Not much accelerates faster, but corners are a whole other story.....

S8 running costs - correction

My figures are for steel brakes. Consumables should not be required in first 200,000 miles for ceramics but if they do, very very expensive (£5k plus).
