Goodwood Festival of Speed. Any tips?
Anyone got some tips on whats best to see and what not to bother with?
Got some tickets from Audi with access to the 'VIP grandstand' and all the bells and whistles for this year's festival. Never been before though. Looks like they have an off-road course nearby to drive an SQ5 & SQ7 too. |
Its all "a bit busy" these days - you need to book yourselves in really early for anything like going on to certain stands or doing the off road things etc or they are booked up ahead for the whole day, but its still enjoyable walking around and lapping up the rather agreeable amount and quality / history of cars which are there. You can also walk around all of the pit areas etc and they often have a "moving motor show" tent near the start where you can book yourself in for test drives on many models (again book early) - have fun! +++

Been a few times myself. Bring good walking shoes, you are on your feet most of the day.
Plenty to see and do, i normally parked myself on the grass in front of the house mid afternoon and people watched. Spent about 15 min talking to Chris Evans last time (pre Top Gear days) |
I'm going on Thursday, cannot wait!
I agree, it has got a little 'busy' of late but I really enjoy wandering around with like-minded car lovers. Wear comfy shoes and take a good picnic. The earlier you can get there, the better. The roads in can get rammed. Just a shame the bloody S8 is in the garage so travelling there in the family battle bus! |

I went on opening day, weather held off and being a Thursday it was quiet compared to my previous visits? My overall observation is that most modern cars getting flung up the hill are so muted compared to their (not so old) previous models. The new RS5 is a perfect example. The collection of Ferrari 250's was something quite special...... |
I'd recommend it to anyone who hasn't been before. A lot of walking and queuing but once you found your way it wan't too bad but I don't get how people can spend the whole 3-4 days there, we saw everything we wanted to see in one day.
The Typhoon flying around at lunchtime was captivating. I did the quattro driving experience putting a Q7 through its paces - a very capable offroader. Also did the Cayenne experience with a Porsche driver tearing around a huge muddy field in a Cayenne Turbo. The shoot-out at the end of the day was exciting, got the crowd fired up and I had a perfect view from the Audi stand near Molecomb courner. I can't say any of the new models in the Audi paddock excited me to be honest though and I don't see what all the fuss is about the new RS5. No A8/S8 there. There was a fully loaded (really) £150k 760iL in the BMW stable courtyard. A lovely deep blue but with awful orange peel paint. Also an i8 with £8700 flip paint design that was immaculately finished, so it proves they can do it decent custom paint. Not much brand presence from Aston, Ferrari and Lamborghini but lots of them competing on the hill. The Range Rover Velar was quite striking but obviously this would have been a top spec car with nice paint etc. The interior seemed quite cheap for the price but they will obviously sell by the bucket load because of the badge. In fact anything below the RR Sport is not great in that respect considering the price point. Maserati were offering a £10,000 watch with each MC Stradale order if you expressed an interest there and then. 3 month lead time. So clearly they aren't selling any! This is as close as anyone was getting to the Chiron but lots of Veyrons and other hypercars you could have a mooch around. http://i64.tinypic.com/2a9w2g4.jpg That one off commissioned Rolls-Royce Sweeptail is a monstrosity. Only Ghosts in the RR area as the new Phantom's release is imminent. http://i63.tinypic.com/nbpt2r.jpg The Ford GT is beautiful. The FXX Ferraris are bloody loud even on idle and just breathing on the throttle. http://i66.tinypic.com/ljok9.jpg Didn't actually take that many pictures throughout the day but there are lots of press pics around. http://i65.tinypic.com/2md5sfq.jpg http://i64.tinypic.com/sxdim9.jpg http://i65.tinypic.com/2e6d6hz.jpg http://i66.tinypic.com/2wly7td.jpg http://i63.tinypic.com/zn0opy.jpg Very busy day though. I think I'd aim to go Friday if not Thursday in the future. |
