Winter tyres had a quick mention on BBC news this morning
Insurance companys should insist on them and it could even make insurance cheaper

The first time I used winter tyres, quite a few years ago now, my insurers first reaction was, "It's a modification, your premium will go up".

After a brief discussion that changed to "It's a modification, we need to record it on your policy". Premium was the same.

I've never been offered a reduction, except by the usual process of changing insurers. :tuttut:

Mind you their whole attitude to options/modifications is inexplicable. The same company wanted to record all the factory-fit options (over standard) on our old Ford Focus as modifications (e.g. ABS) but when it came to the S8 they didn't even ask - probably couldn't fit on the paperwork and where would you start!

Its weird isn't it, and depends on your insurance company, my policy with the S8 actually went down by £180 on renewal after I had the flaps delete, remap and exhaust all added... Adrian Flux explained that having a modified car opened their quotes up for other underwriters who wouldn't underwrite a non-modified car.

You cant make this **** up, insurance is a murky world lol

My insurance company insisted on putting down my new engine and rebuilt gearbox as modifications which increase the value of the car, but wouldn't let me do agreed value on it because it was under £10K http://www.corradov8.com/pics/screwy.gif

They let me do whatever I want with wheels and tyres though so I didn't bother telling them about the winters on the A6. The S8 is hibernating so doesn't need them :)
