Knocking/Rumbling when turning left - any ideas?

I am getting a knocking/rumble which I can feel coming through the floor when I turn left or change lane toward the left from the O/S wheel area

I've changed the CV joint (CV boot was split) - no change.

Changed the track rod ends - they were worn but its not fixed it.

levered all the ball joints in sight to see if they're slack or have wear on them.

I've put the wheel back on the hub without drive shaft or caliper fitted and cannot feel any play, rumble or anything wrong with the wheel bearing, it will spin away for 5 mins after spinning it up by hand.

I get the feeling there is something wrong with the subframe or lower control arms where they join the car under your feet while driving - any body got any ideas?

You seem to have checked everthing I can think of. Have you checked the subframe bolts and inner control arm bolts are tight?
After that all I can think of is tracking / trackrod ends.....

I haven't actually checked the subframe bolts - will do that tomorrow.
Are they the three or four straight into the car floor around the mounting plate?

I removed the rearward bottom link arm to subframe at the ball joint on hub and it seems to be firm at the subframe end.
The forward link arm however can be moved laterally along its bolt - I reckon the rubber bush should be bonded on to the bolt through the subframe?

Perhaps this is what is giving me the grief?

BTW I hate nounting new CV boots - the damned clips never stay on no matter how much degreasing of the inner lip of the boot and OD of CV joint you try. This is even an OEM clip, brand new.......

Looks like you have found your culprit. :)

The forward connecting arm should have no movement at all. Remember the bolt should be tighted when full weight is on the suspension. The bush is bonded into the control arm and when the bolt is tight there should be no movement.

There are 4 bolts on the subframe and a further 3 each side on the rear mounting point plate.

Update - what I thought was movement turned out to be just stretch on the bush of the track control arm.
Everything is tight under there and no slack on any ball joint.

Am I right thinking that a rumble/knocking felt through the floor is unlinkely to be a bearing? It is whisper quiet on the straight and a gentle low speed curve but any uneveness of the road surface or push it a little faster gets this noise.

Oh yeah also found out that the the ABS sensor is stuck fast - probably going to destroy that getting it out

Check the brake caliper see if it's knocking.

Wheel bearing would have been high on my list, even if it feels good by hand.... half a ton exerts way more force than your hands, and when turning there are additional sideway forces...

Are the wheels all balanced and true - an unbalaced wheel can stress the bearings / joints too...

Saturbo 5th March 2010 06:05 PM

Wheels are perfect (ran a clock on them while it was up on jacks) balanced two weeks ago with new tyres (noise was there before new tyres).

I'm going to have a go at changing the bearing tomorrow anyhoo - I've bought it so I might as well use it.

So, update
After spending the best part of 9 hours getting the bearing housing out of the car and changing the bearing (including drilling out the upper pinch bolt) its made no difference at all to the rumble.

I'm getting really fed up with this car now and the annoying thing is its a good car otherwise.

Anybody fancy a 2.8 sport at a knockdown price?

So I've found the problem causing the knocking/rumbling noise - it was the exhaust
I had replaced the two joining couplings just after the cats some time ago and the O/S pipe had relaxed over time and was too close to the heatshield, about 1/2" away. When cornering etc the engine moved just enough to allow a small bolt sticking out of the zorst to knock the body.
