Corrosion on Filler Cap

Hi Guys, To my horror when washing and polishing my D2 today I found corrosion on the outside of the filler cap. It was not there last week when I washed the car?

Is this common, I don't have a mark anywhere else, is the cap made of aluminium or steel?

Seems very strange to come from nowhere and very ugly on a near perfect body.

What to do, change the flap. I would appreciate suggestions?

Without knowing exactly what the flap is made of I would have thought that sourcing a replacement flap would be a more cost effective option than getting a smart repair done to the corrsion. Perhaps a call to A8parts would see if they are able to get you one in the correct colour code?

Its not uncommon, we've seen it on quite a few D2's, but dont really know why it happens. Its ally I believe, and a8parts have colour matched spares in the past and sold them...

The other place they go is on the small black triangle of metal on the top of the rear doors, again for no apparent reason....

That's where my car has some corrosion as well - but I've heard that they are a PITA to replace...

On a scale of 1 to 5, it would be a 3, where 1 is changing the engine and 5 is changing the floor mats +++

Door card off is the tricky bit, and once thats done just 4 bolts hold the upper door to the lower door.

Refit is a little more skilled as you have to get it all lined up again.... David @ a8parts has got quite good at it, but he'd never admit it as its a job he hates doing !

How long is this valid for? And do you have to have had any special check-ups? I have a tiny blemish on the lower N/S front door
