Sunroof replacement…?!
 

Last summer, something gave way in the sunroof mechanism (I’ve got a glass one) and the sunshade no longer automatically slides back into position when the roof is closed. I have to reach back a couple of inches into the void to pull it back manually.

I suspect I will have to replace the entire mechanism, and therefore assume I need to remove the headlining. I think there is a bit of broken something in there that needs pulling out. Prestige has one for sale.

Simple question:am I opening up a whole world of pain?!

Where do I start? Just give it to MJ?? :ROFL:

There is a service manual showing how to remove it step by step, if you have time and a dry place with a roof to do it all under you shouldn't have major issues although the headlining brackets/clips tend to snap off (reading various MJ posts) and I think she had to 3d print new ones

Don't take the whole thing out. The cover mechanism is all separate iirc. The glass one is a little complicated, but there is some info on it in Elsawin

I'm struggling to find a thread I'm sure I posted of stripping down a spare solar roof panel, with the intention of retrofitting to the FE. As MJ says the cover is separate - from memory it's just a couple of spring clips holding it in place on the solar and metal panels. I think it comes out with the roof tilted up, once freed off. Hopefully the glass one isn't massively different in layout?

If all else fails, I seem to recall the actual panel is only held in by a handful of bolts.....

Thanks. The panel slides independently of the glass roof…obviously…so I suspect it is a little more complex as MJ says.

Anyone got a link to the service manual procedure please?

I placed my glass sunroof with a solar one some years ago. IIRC, the wiring was a challenge, but the sunroof and mechanism wasn’t too difficult and fairly intuitive. Definitely no need to remove any roof lining or trim.
