Clicky pod joints?

I must be one of the last folk to use a D2 S8 as his daily transport- but it has been with me since 2009.

This 2000 model year FL car has started to make a clicking noise from the front- only when on lock and only under power.

I expect there is a problem with the front driveshafts, but can anyone give me a few tips about the problem, and how to fix it- or will it run like this for another decade? It's worse turning left. 148,000 miles now.

Many thanks!

You probably need new outer CV joints, they are clicking as they get stuck and then jump free.

If you catch it early, it may be possible to get away with just opening them up, cleaning and re-greasing if grease has become dry and is not lubricating properly. But if this has been going on for a while, it could have caused extra wear, damage and heat and would require replacement. Definitely do not leave it for another decade if you do not want to get stranded, sooner or later instead of jumping free when they get stuck, it will break CV joint cage.

Thanks.

I'll see if I can get my guy to re-grease the things. I'm quite gentle with the old thing!

If you need to pay somebody else to do it, I am not sure it makes sense to clean and regrease. If it does not help, you will have to pay for work again. Parts are not that expensive compared to labour. If you have a lot of free time and don't mind getting your hands dirty then may be worth a go.
