MoT EML - Not a failure!
Got the MoT coming up next week and the EML light has been coming on lately - a symptom of the sports cats confirmed by VCDS. When cleared it can stay off for days or weeks but i didn’t want it popping up during the MoT. I read somewhere that cars registered before July 2003 will not be failed on an EML indication so i checked this out with the MoT garage I'm going to and they confirmed this after consulting their DVLA guidance. So that's a bit of good news :)

That date is a bit of a bummer for me. Despite being built in April 2002 mine was first registered in September 2003! :-(

oooh, very good to know, mine MOT is coming up and I also have the jack-in-the-box EML

Petrol cars registered after 1st July 2003 and Diesel registered after 1st July 2008 will fail with a lit EML I understand.

Interesting bit of information, so I had to dig deeper to find the relevant clause in the rules. The following links will take you to the relevant clauses in the MOT inspection manual:
EML/MIL MOT Exceptions - Petrol EML/MOT MOT Exceptions - Diesel |
The wording there is "first used on or after 1 July 2003" so NOT registered.
Not sure how I prove "use" of a car built in April 2002 though. |
