VERY noisy sunroof...

...just developed this morning. On uneven road surfaces (plenty of them up here) it was making a heck of a noise on the way into work: creaking, rattling, thumping. I've not tried to open it as it's -3C and I have a feeling that may be part of the problem - I washed it on Saturday morning and haven't moved it since. I'm wondering if water in the channels around the sunroof has frozen, expanded and is somehow contributing to this racket.

Once it warms up a bit, I'll go and try to open it and report back

Anyone had similar problems?

It's now +5C and the car has been in the sun for 4 hours. So I opened and closed the sun roof and went for a short spin. I think it's all quiet again.....

I think your first assumption was right Jim. Ice formed and just caused a bit of misalignment therby increasing wind noise etc.

It wasn't wind noise - it only happened on rough road surfaces and the noise was like someone was trying to get in! It creaked and rattled and then banged as if it were bouncing up and down. When I stopped and pushed the corner of the sunroof from outside, that also made a noise. My guess is that the ice filled any space allowed for natural movement and so normally silent movements were amplified.

But a scary experience none-the less. I thought I had a serious problem at one point until I realised where it was coming from.

Hopefully a quiet drive home....

BTW - you're not really waiting to have a go are you :o

Same with my D2 (and many other sunroofd cars) Often you'll get a loud crack then it'll settle down. This way you realise our cars are not rigid boxes.

All quiet on the way home last night and on the way in this morning...

...but today;s problem is parking sensors(see separate thread). Will I get a week of trouble-free motoring some day?

And Mike, check your earlier reply to me on the post about Ben....
