DTD only, or all of them?
I've read the 'know your transmission' sticky but have a quick question.
I know the DTD tranx fitted to my old pre FL A8 is one of those that fail early. My FL S8 is not fitted with a DTD tranx, so is it just as likely to chuck it, or less/ more so? That's it! |
Sadly, all of them ultimately.
The D3 seems more reliable with its 6 speed box, but still they fail. I think the DTD had a rough trot as it was the only quattro box for PF cars after the bulletproof 4 speed box for 3 years. Being the oldest, and thus on average the highest mileage, we see more failures for it. Facelift S8's seem worse. Many dont seem to make 100K for some reason, although plenty do. Its not just an audi thing, almost all auto boxes seem to go. Dont think that helps much though... just forget it and enjoy it right now... +++ |
Land Rover used the 5 speed and 6 speed ZF transmissions without reliability issues on the L322 Range Rover. What does go on them are the diffs on early cars - sorted with a mass-recall... Sort of.
I believe that they never stipulated "fill for life". Maybe this helps? |
I've pondered this too, as the rangeys I've had seem infinitely more reliable on what is basically the same box.
However, Range Rover = < 200 bhp. Audi = > 300 bhp. Range Rover = < 100 mph. Audi = 155 mph I guess, basically, the Audi thrashes the box, where the range rover gives it an easy life..... ? |
IT
My car's got 110,000 now. Mind you, I rarely drive it hard and as it's a London car, I'm kinda hoping it wasn't flogged too much before it came to me. Certainly the stop under the loud pedal was at the most limiting position. Was thinking of spending money on it (maybe LPG) but if the box is already on the raggedy edge of going pop, then that might not be wise. Right! Head back in the sand! |

My old S/C had 400 BHP 400 Lb/ft of torque, and hit 60 in 7 seconds at a weight of 2800KG. I don't know the diesel specs as they never interested me :p The 2007> TDV8 has some serious torque though! |
Yeah, sorry, I was discounting the L322 - Its gearbox is known to fail in much the same way as the Audis.
The previous Classic and P38's with the lower outputs were more reliable is what I was getting at.. +++ |

I have had mine serviced once in 71K miles and it changes 10 times better than my S8 with 67K miles on it, which I had seviced 10K miles ago. I love my S8 but the box is definately the weak link!. |
