central locking
is it possible to change pf air locking system to newer electric on aswel as changing the key to the newer RF folding key?

Mine's a 2002 S8 and it still has the vacuum locking

Easiest and cheapest probably would be aftermarket central locking system with separate remote if you want to go electrical. And leave original system connected in unlocked state for alarm and immobilizer not to go off, but that would mean you loose alarm. You can of course then add aftermarket alarm.
Other option would be complete set from C5 A6 if you want OEM look but that would be expensive even second hand and I do not how much custom work and wiring it would involve but should be able to make it work with alarm. For key would need to change all locks and there is a good chance that transponder in the key is different and would not be possible to code to immobilizer as early ones used fixed code immobilizer and later ones variable code. But I guess you could chop out original transponder from old key and fit inside new one then again I don't know if locks are physically same and if they would fit. I never had need to do anything like that so it's all just speculations based on limited knowledge. I would probably leave it alone. If it ain't broken don't fix it. |
I'm with Comrade Ainarssems on this one.
Personally, I would say it's not worth the trouble. You can't retro-fit the later fully electric central locking, from B6/7 A4, or C5 A6. The actuators are actually fully integrated in the door latches, they are not separate units, like the pneumatic units in the D2. It would certainly be easier to install an after market set-up, with a master actuator in the driver's door, but why would you want to? The D2 pneumatic unit works so well. If you want the later folding key fob, you'll either have to replace all your locks (ignition being the easiest) and ALL four doors, with the later-style handles. Expensive. Or buy blank AAH keys to match your PF (if it's really early) and have them fitted to the later folding fobs. You'll also have to remove your old transponder (krypto) from your older key, and fit it into the folding fob. The main issues will be your remote central locking. Yours is likely to be an IR- (infra red) based system, later cars are RF. Different central locking pump. A heck of a lot of work, for very little gain. The PF cars are great, I wouldn't molest it. |
Ok since my car was recovered without the keys i am going to have to bring this thread alive again.
i need to replace the locks and ignition on my car since some chop has my original key and i am left with the service key.it was the old infra red remote with normal non lazer cut key. with the vacuum central locking system. what options do i have to replace locks? can i go to the folding key type or are those only rf remotes? do i need to replace the whole lock or can i do just the barrels and even get a locksmith to make the barrels match the new key. any help will be appreciated |
