MK4 Golf Fan Stays On

My sister has a 2003 VW Golf GT 1.9 TDI and everytime she parks it up after a drive the fan is always on, in fact even if you start it for 10 seconds then switch it off the fan stays on for about 20 minutes. I've done a Vag Com scan and it comes up with this:

18080 - Coolant Fan Control 1: Open or Short to Ground*
** * * *P1672 - 35-10 - *- *- Intermittent

Has anyone had the same and could you please guide me on where to start? It's been doing it for about a year but now it has started draining the battery, and the only reason I care is because my mum wakes me up to drop her to work in the plus at 8am every bloody morning now I purposely start work at lunchtime so I get a lie in and this is messing up my routine. :rolleyes:

Lol hope you're charging her the going rate for a track day in the plus and how much fuel that must be using haha. Warming up the turbo time etc etc lol

Well I get 19 MPG on the way to work, another reason why I chose to start at 12 and finish at 8 - no traffic! Dropping her off I'm stuck in traffic as its rush hour, get about 13 MPG. Can't really charge her as she is family, but it is runing my mpg. :mad:

Likely to be the fan switch. Not sure where it it is on a Golf I'll take a look at work tommorow and investigate the code for you.

Thank you Mick. +++

The temp switch is on the rad but there is also a fan control module (J293) although Elsawin doesnt seem to say where it is.

From what you are saying I would suspect the J293 but it's probably worth disconecting the fan switch and trying that 1st.

Fan control relay, 2 stage unit, located at base of radiator fan cowling mate. Has big heavy duty wires going to it. Common failure. Easy to check if it's that. If it fails it turns fans on to be safe.
Obviously check coolant sensor for fan switch (in radiator also) etc but most likely that chap.

Thanks Mick and Ben, some very good pointers there. I'll have a mooch around tomorrow, appreciate that. +++
