Driver door mirror gone gold?

not sure if ive gone mad or not, my driver side door mirror has a gold tinge to it almost like a tint, i dont remember it being this way before, the passenger one is normal (ie without the tint).

has something happened to it, was it like this before and i never noticed

update : just remembered i have an old photo which shows the mirror, it was defo not gold before, what is this?

Its the layers in the glass breaking down - it can almost look like someone has poured oil inside between the reflective surface and the glass. My passenger glass did this and the only remedy once it gets going is to replace the glass unfortunately, and that's not cheap at Audi prices although you can get plenty of cheaper aftermarket mirror glass on eBay if you just want heated glass.

yes it looks like that but completely uniform, like a tinted film over the top,

just checked a8parts, £100 for s/h audi glass , Wow thats steep

is it an easy replacement

Architex_mA8tey 18th March 2012 10:37 AM

new ones are nearer £200!
yes its an easy swap there is a circular retaining ring on the back that is clicked onto the motor in the housing. Just centre the mirror and then gently prise it off and it will suddenly click away, then undo the connections on the back for the heated element and the auto dimming. Refitting is the reverse. +++

sounds simple enough,

220 for the glass alone, ive just seen an oem 1 on ebay and put a bid in. 3 days to go

non audi part without the dimming feature is 12.95 on ebay. if i buy it will i get really peed of everytime i get dazzled. probably.

im not sure how much difference it would make

They are automatic dimming mirrors and when the seal around the edges eventually bursts they go bronze and you can see the liquid inside.

Make sure none of the liquid goes onto your paintwork as it can make a right mess requiring a repaint

As I think I commented in another thread, both my cars (see below) have auto-dim interior mirrors (which I do find very useful) but not external and I've never had a problem with dazzle from the external mirrors. It's not an option I'd ever spend any money on.

doh

HPsauce 18th March 2012 11:21 AM

Why "doh"?
The only ones I saw on eBay were from A8parts.
Personally I'd say buy the cheap £12.95 one and try it, you might like it.
If you don't like it buy a "proper" one and sell the cheap one - you might even get more than you paid!

your right if i dont get this oem one on ebay i will, but the doh ws for the spillage and repray
