Dimming rear view mirror fit problem
Having got back our 1996 P reg 4.2 QS over the freezing cold Easter holiday weekend, I decided to add a dimming rear view mirror that I bought ages ago to the car to replace the standard mirror. A fast and easy upgrade to please the Wife who's car it now is and earn a few brownie points in the process.
So, I remove the old mirror, which in fairness almost fell off at the slightest touch. It had been re-attached to the windscreen at some point but not very well! I also removed the small centre visor that lurks behind the mirror and the interior light/sunroof switch plastic moulding. I then set about looking for the mirror wiring plug....Errr I can't find the damn thing. Where do Audi hide them? I thought that being a 1996 MY car it would be fitted with the all singing all dancing 'universal' loom, not a bespoke one. Can anyone offer any advice please or will I have to find some other way to wire this part into the loom? It's a bit of a bugger as I planned to fit an electric rear blind and a solar sunroof not to mention heated rear seats. I've got all the bits. I assumed that the 'universal' loom was lurking with unused perhaps blanked off connections just waiting to be plugged in. It would seem that this might not be the case:-( The car was registered on 12/09/96 I look forward to your replies. Thanks or reading+++ Paul. |
I think I posted a few details of how I did mine a while back, so have a search. There's no wiring loom unless you have the dimming mirrors fitted in the factory.
Basically I took power from the sunroof wiring as it's very easy to access. Get your multimeter out and "eventually" you'll find some suitable leads. I chose a live that "activates" the sunroof with the ignition on and stays live for a short time when ignition is off to facilitate closing. Can't check that car now as it's now in IT's possession and my current one has it factory-fit. |

Check behind the blanks on the dashboard for wiring connectors. If you're Pre 1997 fully prewired, there will be connectors there doing nothing right now.... +++ |
Thanks for those replies gents.
IT, I did check the switch blanks, and sure enough there are wires awaiting switches:D I also checked the rear console for the heated rear seat wires, and they're also present. Silly follow up question, are all front seats fitted with heating elements even if they're not included in the final build? Also what is the black two pin socket that's flopping around beneath the front seats meant to connect to? seat mounted Airbags perhaps? |
