A question about D3 facelifts, and the 4WD system
I've seen, scattered around the internet, the following two statements:
- All D3 A8s had a 60/40 rear/front 4WD system, usig (IIRC) the Torson T3 differential. - Pre facelift cars had the T2 differential givign a 50/50 split. FL cars had the T3 giving the 60/40 split. Now, these can't both be true. Does anyone *know* the turth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth? "Knowing" for these purposes doesnt mean trawling the net for support for one or other statement! |
Unless they mean the PF/FL D2 and all D3 had the 60/40..
Though, I though all '8s had a 60/40 split apart from the D3 S8's and the D4s. |
According to Wikipedia the 40/60 T3 arrived in about 2006/7 initially on the B7 RS4. So the first few years of D3's and all D2's were 50:50.

As far as I know 40:60 split was introduced around 2006 in RS4/RS6 and later filtered down to S models and then to regular non S models.
My best guess would be that D3 S8 and FL D3 A8 probably have 40:60 split but PF D3 A8 will be 50:50 as 40:60 was not available in 2003 Edit: HPSauce beat me to it |
Interesting.
I always *thought* I had 50:50 in my '08. This winter drifting on a lot of pure ice it felt shifted to the back. I was afraid to ask ... And strangely it was the first year with quattro in the winter - the other was a summer queen ... How does the backwards shift feel in a RS4 compared to the previous modell ? Anybody had the experience already ? If somebody can elaborate with some technical sheets, that would be fine. |
I suspect the definitive answer will only be had by finding out when the T3 differential came to be fitted to the S8.
So, who has access to Audi tech sheets? |
