Spongy brake pedal

Hi guys ,
Can anyone help (S8 D2 1998) , I noticed yesterday that the brake pedal went really spongy , on pressing it i I felt the brakes bite then it went really soft with little or no brake bite to then firm up slightly at the bottom of the pedal swing .
I've checked the brake fluid and there is no sign of any leaks anywhere , the brake fluid hasn't gone down at all .
The only odd thing I can see is that the n/s rear brake pad has worn down completely , where the o/s still has about 3mm left on it .
Any ideas ???

Cheers

May be a sticking caliper piston on one side and then the handbrake adjuster taking up some adjustment at the same time?

Also, check all your pad material is there, inner and outer.
When my brakes "went funny" a while back it turned out that one block of pad material had actually come off from the backing plate on an inner front pad.

Cheers chaps ,
I'll get it all checked out this week , it certainly looks like the pad material has vanished , I've never seen a pad wear down that quickly and I think I would have noticed if the caliper had been stuck on for so long , +++

My recent saga was due to a stuck piston on a fromt caliper and one of the pads 'delaminated' as a result. Similar symptoms - spongey with a lot of pedal travel.
