Standheizung! it works! + some data

I figured out how to turn on the Webasto heater. It has to be set on the menu first before the radio control will work.

I tried it out today, I set it for 45 minutes. Ambien temperature was 11C
After 20 minutes coolant temperature was 47C (using VCDS)
After 45 minutes coolant temperature was 58C (using VCDS)

Engine block was luke-warm to the touch. It also turned on the fan to heat the cabin, but I switched that off. Why waste heat on the passangers, I want to warm up the engine.
A little dissapointed the coolant temperature wasnt higher, but 58C is a lot better than a cold start.

Next time I will make note of the fuel level in VCDS before and after. I dont know how accurate that is, if the smallest unit is 1 litre its not going to tell me much.

You will be loving that in the winter, even it is for your engine you will benefit when you start up and get hot air straight away.

Goran, this is lovely feature

That feature must help prolong engine life surely? Can you measure whether the oil temp has been increased at all? I guess that there are not many paths for the heat transfer but it would be interesting to know.

Good point, I will have a look at oil temp.
In theory it should increase it a little bit because there is a heat transfer matrix between oil and coolant in the oil cooler housing. But at least the cylinder block is warmed up and expanded closer to operating temp.

Main benefit will be quicker warm up time overall, which reduces engine wear in any case.

Also once it gets colder less time spent de-icing car if the interior warms up and does it for you means less time cold idling which again reduces engine wear as well as improving fuel economy.

A bit more data. I'm starting to use the standing heater every time before I drive the car now. Today ambient temp was 15C, I set it to 30mins but it switched itself off after 20mins due to low battery voltage.
After only 20mins it heated the coolant to 60C.
